The Oni and The Tale of Shuten-Doji | Japanese Mythology

The Oni are a class of Yokai (A broad category of supernatural creatures in Japanese Mythology). They are said to punish evil and are traditionally depicted as malicious beings with an appetite for destruction, disease, and wickedness.

In Street Fighter you can literally see a human's journey to becoming an Oni through Gouki / Akuma. He starts out as just another student of martial arts, then takes an interest in a forbidden fighting style that was designed to kill without mercy. The fighting style uses a conscious evil power to grant the user great supernatural abilities and strength. He becomes obsessed with it and harnesses it by accepting its conscious desire to kill and destroy, but controls it and wishes to use it to become the greatest warrior in the world. The power eventually consumes him, he loses control of it and he transforms into an Oni, wishing to destroy everything. The only thing that can contest him now is a second Oni, called Kagé.
