Today I'll be taking a look at the world of Mario Scratch Games.

Scratch is home to many Mario fan games, and despite most being fairly basic, there are some that are actually pretty cool and interesting, with a few of which really pushing the limits of Scratch's capabilities.

If you want to try out any of the games featured in this video:

The games featured in this video include Super Mario Scralaxy, Super Mario on Scratch 6: Enlightened, remakes of classic games and more!

My biggest memory with Scralaxy was trying for ages to get it to load on my Mom's macbook. After a lot of fiddling, it worked, and I had fun with the little of it I played.

For once, a scratch games video that isn't just full of "Bad Scratch Games made by children" as an excuse to just make fun of little children. All of these games seem really great!
  • This is an incredible homage to the entire history of Mario games on Scratch. I can't say I've been a massive part of the history behind the Mario side of things but I can certainly say that Super Mike World was one of the reasons I kept going with my Spyro fan game simply because it proved to me that high-quality games can be made with the engine, and I'm still working on that to this day. Thank you so much for making this!

You've done such an outstanding job editing this video and I love your commentary on the games here and Scratch in general. I'm flattered I was included in this mix of games here. Back when I first joined Scratch about 10 years ago, I really only used it to play Mario games when I wasn't allowed to us my brother's Nintendo DS (and since you asked, my first Mario game was New Super Mario Bros.). I found tons of really fun games there and have lots of nostalgia for those days. Once I got a bit better at coding with Scratch and I wasn't really into playing games there as much as I used to be, I really wanted to make Mario games that people like me back in the day could enjoy. I'm also really happy to see people that were inspired by my little fan game exceed what I was able to do even with my best work, like DuckGoose has done with SMOS6 Enlightened. It's always the coolest thing to see people push what the definition of a Scratch game can be.

Holy crap I can't describe in words how happy I felt seeing smos6 :DDD (I made the thumbnails for both smos5 and smos6 and did some of the character designing in smos6)

Absolutely love this video, I love when I see YouTube videos about all these other Mario scratch games that I and many others have made and not just Scratchnapped or a Super Mario Bros. Remake (even though those projects are still really good). I remember playing your Super Mike World games and being very inspired by them as well! Love this video and will continue to watch all your other content on YouTube and play your new games that are being made on unity! Thanks!
  • Depending on what counts as a Mario game, there's the old Scratchnapped. The same platformer style with similar types of enemies.

0:24 seeing Jon appearing is the most goofiest thing i saw in this video
  • @olek0
glad to see a scratch games video that isn't just looking at all the bad ones that children made

This makes me very happy to see someone appreciating Scratch. The community for the most part is really wholesome, and that coupled with incredible creativity and coding has created some of the best video game experiences I've had to date. It's just a really chill corner of the internet, and I'm happy to see it get the love it deserves! Too bad my Mario Scratch fangame isn't anywhere near close to done yet (especially since this would be a great place to get it out there), but hey, what can you do. Seriously again, this video is amazing, and I can't thank you enough for the kind words to these creators.

As a speedrunner of SMOS myself, i gotta say this video is epic.
  • @Bluebatstar
Great video! It’s astonishing how impressive people on Scratch can get considering it’s a beginner software, it’s amazing.
  • You're still contributing to collaboration projects on Scratch? That's pretty cool! Love to see it.
  • @rovertronic
The Mario games on scratch seem so insanely good and high quality now! Back when I looked up Mario games on scratch, they were all... well, if anyone remembers that Super Mario 64 clone, you'll know what I'm talking about.

There's also the Scratchnapped games by Griffpatch, but those always get talked about so it's nice to see others get the spotlight here (not a diss on Scratchnapped though). If you have the knowledge and cleverness you can really do some pretty impressive things with Scratch. Honestly that's partly why I still use it to this day, I'm capable of using like literally any other superior form of software development with an actual programming language if I want to, but I like working within the limitations Scratch has because if you want to make something ambitious under such limitations, it really forces you to think outside of the box and come up with so many different tricks and solutions to keep things as efficient as possible that you would never really think of otherwise if you didn't have to work within such restrictions, and it helps improve my programming skills as a whole in that way too.
  • I liked this video. It’s cool to see my project in the video. According to the footage, it looks to be the older version before I revamped the entire thing from “scratch” (no pun intended). The new version includes a demo and more accurate details. It’s the same two levels, as I can’t get moving platforms to work in the engine I’m using. Thanks for playing it! 😀
  • Can't believe how impressive these game are, and they were made on Scratch of all things. Props to all the developers, seriously, very impressive indeed.
  • @Rsam005
Oh my god now I wanna play those games they look so amazing
