The Death Korps of Krieg are galaxy renowned trenchfighters and siege specialists. Their guardsmen stand emotionless against hails of gunfire, artillery bombardment all in the name of atoning for their planet's sins.

When a nearby regiment is forced to pull back lest they be completely wiped out, the Krieg 143rd commits to a full frontal charge to regain lost ground. Chaos renegades stand ready to repel the attackers, while the only sign of emotion from the guardsmen are the glint of their gasmasks in the fires of the battlefield.

200 hours of work and a few dozen in sound design, I finally finished this dang 5 minute clip. Pretty big jump considering I only ever done 30-40 second shorts before. It was painful, frustrating and showed me how much more I have to learn, and where my weaknesses lie, but it was fun seeing the final result.

Criticism and feedback is HIGHLY appreciated! I'm still a fledgling hobbyist animator who works on animations in my free time between classes, so any and all critique is extremely useful to help me learn to be a better animator!

Particular points of note I would appreciate feedback on are Motion, sound design, and pacing.

  • "We have captured and secured enemy trenches, sir" "Brilliant. Where's the rest of the regiment?" "Dead again, sir."
  • @Theoxuesu
"The siege goes well. With our continued barrage, their defenses should be down in three months." "But we've been here a month already." "Yes, sir. We're right on schedule."
  • @NikSwiftDigs
Seeing the heretic soldier check in on his companion when they tripped over fleeing the Kriegsman was a fun detail, because it reflected a degree of compassion which our protagonists do not have.
  • @chikitabowow
Honestly this is probably the most on point portrayal of the Death Korps, like it's not the meme-y "Haha me gonna suicide" territory that they're usually subjected to
  • @suriil9875
Any other Commissaire : "Forward , you cowards!" Kreig Commissaire : "Slow down, you bastards!"
  • @BuffBisexual
The fact their planets name literally means war in German is fantastic to me
  • @MN-vz8qm
Love the design of these guys, the gaz mask is british, the clothes are french, the helmet and the name (krieg = war) are german, really a concentrate of ww1.
  • The death korps are the type of dudes to play russian roulette with all 6 rounds loaded in a revolver
  • "Guard, where is the rest of your squad?" "Dead, sir." "Very well. Join the lines." "Yes, sir."
  • Chaos cultists: "WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!" "NOOOOOOOO" imperial guardsman: "We're all going to die" "I know" Death korps: "We are all going to die" "Good" 👍

I love how the Commisar shows no caution in the trench, head not hunched, no reactions tonl the explosions, clearly seasoned. He knows his job is easy as no one in his unit would even think of retreating, and he will only have to work hard to get into the action before the kriegsmen kill all the enemy themselves. The only soldiers as fearless as a Commisar.

Krieger: Gets half of chest blown off by autocannon shell Krieger 2: 'Man, i wish i had some of that'
  • @kubikkuratko188
Krieg commnder: "Call danger close bombardement if need be." Other Krieger: " You mean immidiatelly after attack.Right?"
  • My favorite thing about this is the small details you put into it, but most notably the sound of the las gun fire. That is probably the closest thing to what an actual laser would sound like, imo. Not the classic "pew pew" we all know but something more grounded. Well done.
  • @ReconRookie
Just wanna point out how well executed the sequence at 4:10 is. Like, that's some textbook trench clearing. Throw a grenade, wait for detonation and immediately open fire. Don't wait for a target since if anyone survived that blast they aren't gonna give you a chance to take careful aim. Kinda small detail done really well
  • @DinsRune
"We're retreating due to heavy losses, sir." "No you're not." "No we're not, sir."
  • I love how the runner is basically told “your regiment sucks, you’re dying with us now”. Just perfectly describes Krieg
  • What I love about this is that it portrays the Guard as being a genuinely competent and well trained force. So many people frequently compare them to Astartes or Xenos and just assume that the IG are mere fodder and just bodies to add to the pile. However people forget that in the spectrum of human soldiers in the Imperium, guardsmen are actually fairly high up and surpass many layers of recruitment beyond militia and PDF etc. As a result, it is actually refreshing to show them as being capable in combat and not just as meat for slaughter. These aren't just your average press ganged mongrels or desperate voidsmen. They are a dedicated and elite combat force and its good to see such depictions of the Guard.

What I like about this video is that it presents another view on the Chaos troppers. When one of them trips his comrade checks in on him and stays behind to cover the retreat of the others. It shows a degree of compassion, duty and heroism that is rarely given to the human followers of Chaos. Usually they are these one dimensional charicatures.
