Once upon a time I was invited by Mr. Patina to grab a cold one, and as a friend I of course brought a gift. I came by with two mostly identical metal shears in pretty bad condition. So obviously I asked him to do a competition, an offer he couldn’t refuse?

So I took this metal shear apart, cleaned off the dirt from the past 300 years and gave it a good clean. Some of the old grease just came off by scraping. After that I put every part in my sandblasting cabinet and did a lot of metal works afterwards: filing, shaping, sanding, and so on. When the metal work was done, I powder coated the main part in a mix of “antique hammer effects silver” and "RAL 5012 Lichtblau".

The blades were reshaped with a belt grinder, while sanding, I cooled down the blades in water to keep the hardness.
I zinc plated every screw after truning the heads and cutting the thread.

Parts that are moving against each other where cold blued. I also took care of the Mubea Brand Logo and recreated the sticker, which is providing information on cutting limits.

The final test shows, that this shear works perfectly again. I hope you have fun with the video! I watched Mr Patina's first and thought "no way will Dr Beer beat that". Was I wrong! Yours was on another level 🏆
  • @condar419
I love that you two are having this friendly competition. Excellent job, I love the 'herringbone' effect of the wooden pieces. I've watched both videos, so I'm off to vote now.
  • This is a really hard choice. Both of you are true masters with a lot of love for detail and a great craftsmanship. Thank you for your videos.
  • @mookystank
This is great. I came here from Mister Patina and having seen references to you and comments from you in his videos. The fact that you guys are friends in real life and interact in real life and through these videos is very cool. You two have provided hours of entertainment for me and your videos help me mentally. Thank you both so much.
  • This has to be the best restoration you've ever done on this channel! This shear was revived from the dead! The mounting table had your own style in design. It gives the finished project its own individuality. This was outstanding!
  • @davesmith5656
Love the way you restored that old wooden shipping crate! It look better than it was originally! Two restoration projects, one for the cutter, and one for the shipping crate!!
  • I love the look and especially the base you made. You took the time to make it versatile and UN-complicated. Your work is very good and I enjoyed the video. What you did made it go over the top compared to Mr. Patina. Although Mr. Patina made it simple yet elegant in doing. Loved both. For showmanship, you win. For being competitive and simple, he does. thanks to you both.
  • Now we need the trifecta. Mister Patina, Not Terrible Restorations, and my mechanics
  • @shedmanx3640
You both have done excellent work. Your genius move in repurposing old packing crates into that stunning wooden base wins my vote. 😍
  • Well done, without words, for such precise work and craftsmanship, the great German quality, one can only bow down, respect from old BG.
  • One of your best yet (and that's saying something). Clear vision on the looks and functionality restored. Hats off!
  • Excellent work!! I'm a big fan of the cold blueing- that tipped my vote to your side on the battle :) The yellow pinstripe paint needed to be a bit thicker for a better coating but I appreciated the style! Double points for repurposing the ply for the handle and secondary base, very resourceful! MORE BATTLES!
  • @StealthDonut1
The work here is beyond gorgeous. You did everything required for a great showdown, plus you included a delicious beer review! Next up, you guys should get together and do a collaboration on a single BIG project together! I salute you, Dr. Beer!
  • 😊 very nice, love the addition of the wood grip, so much more comfortable for the user. Bonus points for the wood joining. Loved both videos, but I vote for you on the win. 👍
  • @Vickie-Bligh
Dr B., this was fun to watch and that you were in 'competition with Mr P made it even more so. Nicely restored and very well filmed. Thanks for sharing.

Since it's a contest and we are the judges, I have created categories by which each restoration is to be judged. The categories are Disassembly, Cleaning and Rust Removal, Hardware and Casting Improvement, Paint Preparation, Painting, Originality, Re-assembly, and Operation. Each category has a scale of 1-5 (1 is lowest score, 5 is highest score) for a possible total of 40 points. Disassembly - 5 Cleaning and Rust Removal - 5 Hardware and Casting Improvement - 5 Paint Preparation - 5 Painting - 3 (The pin striping was thin and uneven) Originality - 5 (does not include the new mounting base) Re-assembly - 5 Operation - 5 TOTAL = 38 Your restoration turned out beautifully! You went above and beyond by paying careful attention to the details. I feel that the paint you chose to use was as close to the original as possible. Very nicely done.
