"But I don't think I'm smarter; I just do the stupid homework!" That's probably one of the smartest lines ever.
  • Blink and you'll miss it, but in just 25 seconds Hogarth articulates the innermost feelings of every "gifted kid" who ever lived.

This scene is a perfect summation of how this movie blends idealized animated characters with archetypes and character traits that feel real and grounded. Most child protagonists in movies are annoying but in this scene as a child you can relate to Hogarth and as an adult you find his spiel oddly charming. Also in most films Dean would be a twist villain or an unrealistically evil adult, but in this he’s just a relaxed everyman who serves as one of the few people Hogarth can trust.
  • The voice actor had to legit speedrun through their script to get that rant out to fit the character's state of mind

"If everyone just did the stupid homework they can move up a grade and get pounded too" killed me.

I love how this 20 seconds exposed all that was needed to know about Hogarth's backstory, at least what he does in school and aspects of his personality.

I honestly think the most underrated moment of this clip is the slow shrug and turn that Dean does. "okayyy, i know the consequences of this decision to give a child espresso but I'm ready for whatever occurs."

Not a bad little rant, someone wrote the shit out of that.
  • Fun Fact: Director Brad Bird did all of Hogarth's animation in this scene. He has always been known for being hands on rather than a director who leads form afar. He is a well seasoned animator with plenty of years of experience and I'm glad he did this scene. The personality and expressions is heavily inspired by the voice actor and he really puts that in the spotlight. Brad Bird also did The Incredible and Ratatouille if you thought his name sounded familiar. This was his first time directing a feature length film and he blew it out of the water.
  • Whoever at Cartoon Network was obsessed enough with this film to get it playing on the channel at all hours of the day every Thanksgiving did this world a phenomenal service.
  • This kid was UNDERRATED as a voice actor, Scrap that. This WHOLE MOVIE is underrated.

"If they just did the stupid homework they could move up a grade and get pounded too" That's too funny.
  • @Wonkyloo
I love how he figures out he's out of coffee partway through the rant, but his mouth is already working on overtime to get the thoughts in his head out, so when he finally gets to his point he just tacks the coffee question onto the end of the sentence because he's actually been thinking about the coffee for quite a while. Supreme characterization from the writers, actors, and animators just in this <1 minute long clip.

So she moved me up a grade because I wasn't fitting in, so now I'm even more not fitting in. I was getting good grades, y'know, like always, so my mom says "You need stimulation!", and I go "No, I'm stimulated enough right now." So she goes "Nuh-uh, you don't have a challenge, you need a challenge." So now I'm challenged alright, I'M CHALLENGED TO HOLD ON TO MY LUNCH MONEY! Because of all the big mooses who want to pound me, because I'm a shrimpy dork who thinks he's smarter than them. But I don't think I'm smarter, I just do the stupid homework. If everyone else just did the stupid homework, they could move up a grade and get pounded too. Is there any more coffee?
  • @Itsgregrogstad
“You want some milk or ugh...milk?” I love how he’s probably about to say whiskey but then realizes he around a child. Such a good movie.
  • @draccoonxcii1288
    As a kid: "Hogarth's talking funny!"😆 As an adult: "God, that's relatable..."🤔
  • I love how he transitions straight from lamenting that if other people "did the stupid homework" they would be as good as him into "isthereanymorecoffee?"
