Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Hellboy's Samaritan Prop, Part 2!

Published 2020-10-14
Adam pushes the limits of his machining skills as he moves onto the next part of his Hellboy Samaritan prop replica build. In making the closure latch of the Good Samaritan, he has to make something that's not only aesthetically accurate, but functions as a working mechanism as well. It's going to require some precise engineering!

Holy crap that "accidental" clicking must have been such a pleasant surprise.

That ratcheting sound of the cilinder because of the loose magnet: priceless indeed!!!
  • Man, at this rate Adam is never gonna get old, two person weeks is only 1 Adam day?!
  • @dysartes
Hang on, Adam - you didn't have chunks of the True Cross in your shop as materials? I'm shocked, sir, shocked...

So few people can appreciate genuine precision. Excellent work.

I think the best part of watching Adam work through his projects is this: We come here to watch a talented, passionate, and very experienced maker. It comes with this expectation of, "This guy knows what he's doing.", and yet, his humility is inspiring. Even Adam is still learning and exploring, failing and succeeding, making and remaking as he moves through these projects. I've learned to break things down into smaller shapes and tasks to understand them, and to be entirely accepting, even welcoming of failure, provided I keep moving towards my goal. Thanks Adam. It's wonderful to have a person like you as an example for people like us.
  • I feel like if Adam Savage was my high school shop teacher, I'd be a millionaire by now.
  • Adam should remake his nut and bolt at the end of this year – really show off what he's learned and new abilities

Loving this build series. It's so satisfying and inspiring to see someone hone their craft for the sheer sake of improving! It's also a testament to how placing your attention on something creative can help one overcome personal issues in a productive way. I know Adam went into this after hearing the news regarding Grant, but now I like to think that he will look at this prop with fondness. What a way to turn something tragic into something you can cherish forever, whilst gaining new skills along the way! Great work as always!

Lockdown Adam's journey to post-apocalyptic engineer is really coming along with the apron and precision gunsmithing.

Effing awesome. The surprise ending was a treat to see happen — Everyone that watches this will wish they could just spin that barrel for a while. Wow, is that satisfying!
  • My dad, who enjoyed math, electronics, and his little basement shop of tools, would have loved these videos. He died of cancer 17 years ago, and each time I watch one of these, I get to spend some time with him. Thanks, Adam. He would have been fond of your method, as well as your demeanor and wandering away from the camera.
  • 12:05 anyone else catch Burrs line from the dual in Hamilton. That made me so happy! Take care of yourself Adam we love you!

'Think like a model maker' Teacher: "so why would we do this" Me: "cause I'm lazy" Teacher: "you'll go far" If I've learned nothing else, its that often times a solution is the shortest line between 2 points. Why does the sight have a 1 inch radius, cause that bit was already in the mill lol Omg, I can't explain my reaction to the barrel clicking. Just glee.

The joy when you get the click from the magnet falling out, it put a huge smile on my face. Thank you!
