The Nenetses, the last reindeer breeders of the Great North, live in northern Siberia. Edik is fourteen years old and goes to school in the small village of Antipayouta. During his spring vacation, Edik goes home to see his parents who live in a vast ice desert : the tundra.

In this universe, dominated by the cold and frighteningly violent winds, Edik must learn about the difficult life of a reindeer breeder. If he proves worthy of his ancestors, he will take his place among the men.

Four thousand kilometers away, in southern Siberia, in the heart of the Altaï, live the camel breeders of Bactriane. The last few summers have been too hot, and it’s become more and more difficult to find enough green pastures to feed their entire herd during the winter.

Natsag, the head of the family, has decided that, with the help of the spirits, this is the year he will choose which of his two grandchildren, Altagan or Dsolbo should take charge of half of the herd. The boy he chooses will thus gain his independence and will be recognized in the Mongol world as a true man.

From the north to the south of the huge expanse of Siberia, people have kept their roots and perpetuated their ancient culture of nomadic animal breeders. Edik, Altagan and Dsolbo, children of the steppes and of the tundra, all lovers of dry and often hostile lands, will have to retain the teachings of their elders in their hearts if they are to become true men.

Anyone else blown away by the strength of the camels? The amount they can carry, the distance, and all on the sand. It's amazing!
  • Did Edik go back to school? That's what he really wanted. At 14, I hope he was allowed! They are a beautiful family. 🐱🐱

They were trained to survive in the harshest environment. There's no way around since were born and raised in that way, unless they stumble a fortunate encounter that will change their way of living. Hat's off to your courage and perseverance.

This seemingly otherworldly & rare doc. about the life of those people, Nenetses, simply unfolds us to discern how different, somewhat mysterious, & even undiscovered our planet is, depending on the regions. They are truly ingenious & resourceful enough to overcome their maliciously limited resources in such an incredibly inhospitable barren terrain. In addition, you need an unyielding determination, interminable endurance, & immeasurable tenacity to be able to survive in the antagonistic part of our planet, northern Siberia in Russia. Hence, I can't help doffing my hat to those people, & lastly, this doc. is truly of incalculable value to us living in more or less comfortable parts of the earth. (Jan/02/2024)

This beautiful documentary inspired courage and hope in my heart. I'm a city dweller where there's an abundance of facilities but still people in big cities are afraid to take risks. This powerful story taught me to live a life of freedom like the nomads. Love from India ❤✌️

Here is to those photographers who had spent day & night at such an inhospitable & inaccessible extreme terrain in the face of adverse conditions. It simply exhibits their resolute & unwavering determination & dedication of the sheer professional commitment for their crafts. Hence, I can't help doffing my hat to them. Lastly I'm so happy & glad to see that boy had succeeded in his task of which his parents were totally proud. Enjoying & appreciating it to the core, & I've gained new insight into the life & behavior of those tough & courageous nomads in Siberia.,,,,,,(08/12/23)
