Regarding difficulty, having played radical red on easy mode before it's really not terribly difficult, the self imposed rule I put in was to not rare candy above my highest level Pokemon, except right before a level cap change / major boss battle and to use the hardcore caps as my soft caps (meaning I could get my Pokemon close to leveling before entering the battle with the gym leader/boss) Here's the caps, meaning you have to be below this level (not equal to) before entering the battle. I'll leave a bunch of spaces so if you don't want to see it you can keep scrolling.
