I don't think I've ever seen a musical, but this is not what I expected. I really enjoyed this...

My obsession with Hamilton has got to the point where I just sit back and watch other people become obsessed with it
  • @VortexWonder
All the theatre kids when he said his friend invited him to see Hamilton a couple of times and he refused: 🖕👁👄👁

So, a quick note about the choreography, if no one else has mentioned this yet: Normally, the chorus members all have rifles for the Battle of Yorktown. However, this performance is from the 2016 Tony Awards, which took place less than 24 hours after the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando. In deference to that tragedy, the cast of Hamilton opted not to use any firearms on stage (even if they were just props). This is why some of the cast members look like they're "doing Tae Bo," as you observed. They're still doing the original choreography, but since they're not using any of the prop guns, they basically have to pantomime holding a musket while they're dancing.

Him: makes weird noise "what was that noise I made??" Me: that's called fangirling my dude xD
  • @TheMeghan99
He’s so impressed with the dancing, wait until he sees the broadway version with the turntable.... 😳

I kind of love people who “don’t do musicals” discovering this amazing ness.

“ I got to rewind this a bit.” Me: REWIND! REWIND!
  • @bobbihearn6168
Everytime Layfayette says "Freedom for America! FREEDOM FOR FRANCE!!" I just get so sad because he says it alone, and Hamilton went back on his promise to help😭
  • Anybody who isn't hype af at the Hercules Mulligan part needs to reevaluate their life choices
  • The way he rewinds and watches the cool scenes and the way his face is while watching it again and again speaks to me on a spiritual level.

Ok about the question you had about the cast: here is a super long answer. When shows open on Broadway(meaning when they start) that’s the original broadway cast (OBC). They’re the ones you hear on the cast recording. This clip is the OBC of Hamilton performing at the Tony Awards. They stay in New York and don’t travel or tour around anywhere; they’re permanently stationed in New York. Over time, the actors in that cast may leave the show to do something else or honor another commitment, and they’ll be replaced. If the show is selling well and still making money then they’ll just keep replacing people as needed until the show closes (ends). Hamilton is extremely popular, so I can’t see that happening for awhile. But the actors who get casted for the Broadway cast either as OBC members or replacements stay in New York with that particular production. To this date, only one OBC member is still with the Broadway production. (Thayne Jasperson, who plays Samuel Seabury and is an ensemble dancer). Popular shows often have a tour cast as well, which is the exact same show but it travels around the country and plays in different theaters. A brand new cast of actors are casted for the tour, and can also be replaced as long as the tour runs. There is no cast recording for tour shows, but being in a tour of a broadway show is still a huge accomplishment. Now, usually, there’s one tour for each show while it’s running on broadway. Hamilton is so popular, it has THREE. All different casts, all travel to different places around the country, but performing the same show every night. At one point for Hamilton they also had a permanent cast in Chicago, so they had four productions of the same show going at once. That is INSANE and unheard of in the broadway world. So I hope that answers your question! :)

They decided to perform this song at the 70th Tony Awards without muskets because the deadly shooting at a Orlando nightclub had just happened the night before the ceremony. Even now, years later this fact humbles me whenever I watch this particular performance.
  • @daddy2971
wait wait wait wait wait let me get this one thing straight you got invited to go see hamilton... and said NO ??
  • @MikeNRoll808
Welcome to the Hamilton addiction. First phase: wow this is good. Second phase: How long can they keep this up? Third phase: Wow...ok this is genius. Fourth phase: Why am I crying in a musical about Alexander Hamilton? Fifth phase: Absolute addiction and learning "Satisfied" and "Guns and Ships" word for word.

I literally read this as “methhead” and I was so concerned lmfao
  • I never noticed before that the soldier Laurens is fighting that Red Coat with is The Bullet. The next scene he has is his "death song".
  • Hamilton was an immigrant from the Caribbean , that’s why the line said “‘immigrants get the job done” and Lafayette was from France .
  • @samtaylor3706
Fun little fact! When Laurens is singing the line " We'll never be free until we end slavery!" He does a little hand shake with a lady. This lady's name is Ariana DeBose, she plays the bullet (she creates a recurring theme of being in the in the presence of the characters who died at the hand of a bullet) so when she shakes hand with John Laurens she was actually foreshadowing his death by shotgun while trying to create an all African American army.

This was a fucking delight to watch. I grew up around musical theater, and it's so cool to see "anti-musical" folks getting as excited about this as I am. And it's the production itself that really sells it -- the choreography, the blocking, the lighting (jesus, the lighting!), all the technical stuff is just as important to this show as the music and book. The music's great, the cast is fantastic, but it's the show as a whole that's really special. Musicals aren't for everyone, and they certainly aren't all like Hamilton. But if any musical is worth a try, it's this one. Thanks for the smile, man. And make sure to catch "My Shot/The Story of Tonight" and "Guns and Ships," even if you don't end up watching the whole show.

Your being distracted by the choreography is exactly why a lot of musical theater nerds will talk about whether they should listen to the soundtrack before seeing the show just because so much plot can happen in the music, and if you can't both listen to the lyrics and watch everything on stage at once, then it helps to get a sneak peek of the music first.
