I loved this game as a kid, and playing it over and over (and over) during my elementary school days was the only way I ever managed to get anywhere in this. Without TONS of practice, most people probably won't get past the first couple levels, and it is the difficulty level that most people criticize the most about this game. Thankfully, the graphics and sound are fantastic, and help to make seeing the same areas OVER and OVER again a bit less of a chore.
It gets cheap at the very end, but otherwise, the challenge is extremely steep but usually fair once you get used to the finicky controls (I have no doubt people lacking an absurd amount of patience will completely disagree!). I actually managed to get through it without losing a turtle once, though I almost lost Donatello a few times. Without good ol' Don, you might as well just reset the NES and try again.
And, is it just me, or does April's hair make her look like Davy Crocket in just about every cinematic that she appears in? I swear she's wearing a coon-skin cap! Just look at the intro or the ending and you'll see what I mean, I'm sure.
This replacement to my original, 240p recording is a much better video in just about every way. I practiced a fair amount more before playing this time, don't struggle anywhere near as much in the harder parts near the end, and happen to guess the correct area to find the Technodrome entrance in the very first time! I hope you enjoy this sadistic classic!

So it's been 32 years since I was able to really see the ending. Will admit, couldn't pass that water level and gave up. Today happens to be the anniversary of when this game came out (May 12th, 1989). Good job beating it towards the end.

~25 years after I actually played the game, with my classmates, and we couldn't beat it, I finally learn that you can actually switch the character mid-game. :O

Raphael was always the sacrificial turtle used in the water level because he is useless everywhere else.

That intro is the most hype cutscene of all time.. I remember after the water dam how shook I was as a kid after going home to see the lair destroyed and Shredder appears on the tv saying he has Splinter. Looking at it now, the game had a kind of darker/gritty tone like the first movie, I love it.

I remember playing this game every chance I had as a kid. Hard as Hell at some spots. Especially where you swimming through the electric seaweed! I HATED that part! Great job on this.

Dear lord! This game was freaking difficult. When I was 6, back in the late 80's, I beat Super Mario Bros in 10 minutes and many other NES games, but I could never beat TMNT, just made it into the final base, but never to Shredder. Whoever made this, I take my hat off!

Oh this brings back the memories of just shutting off the TV but keeping the Nintendo on with the game paused, because video games hadn’t developed memory cards or save points yet. Ahhhh
