This video has been a long-requested one on my channel. Ever since the first few times I uploaded my full flight videos, I've been receiving comments about creating a complete settings guide to help Microsoft Flight Simulator both 'look' and 'perform' better. In this video, we take a detailed deep dive into my personal system specifications and go through my various PC settings, Nvidia control panel settings, User config file settings for MSFS and finally look into my in-sim graphics settings. The project is a culmination of hours of research and hardwork to be able to bring these tips and tricks to the community. As usual, if you enjoyed the video, please leave a like, subscribe to the channel and get involved in the comments to let me know your thoughts on everything flightsim and aviation related. Thanks for Flying By!

  • Ladies and gentlemen, I just want to put a quick pinned comment in here regarding some of the discrepancies that have been pointed out since this video was published. Here goes:  - There is a part 2 to this mini video series where a lot of discrepancies are addressed. You can check it out here (highly recommend you do): https://youtu.be/zBZwaFBjLR0 - To find your userconfig file, please check the description section of the video as there are paths there that might help you find your file location - PLEASE ENSURE YOU TURN IMAGE SCALING 'OFF' IN THE NVC. THE ADVISE IN THE VIDEO WAS MISGUIDED IN THAT REGARD! Do let me know if you have any more questions, as I continue to answer your comments on a regular basis. Thanks for watching guys, and thanks for Flying By!

Oh my god, what is this witchcraft? My sim is now at the same time WAY more gorgeous and much more fluid! So sad that I can only leave a single like. I also second what others have written before, you have an amazing, calm, well organised, and easy to understand way of presenting things.
  • I've tried a lot of settings recommended by other folks, with incremental results. Your step-by-step guidance has completely transformed my experience. The simulator now runs and looks like the Microsoft advertising videos. Thank you! 😊
  • @canprince
I have to say this is by far one of, if not the best settings video I have seen. The information was concise and extremely well organized. Your explanations were clear and well articulated. You can tell a considerable amount of time and effort went into creating it. Well done, and thank you for sharing. 😀
  • Varun, I cannot say this enough... "Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!" for creating and sharing this video. Your style is so easy to follow and understand, and I absolutely appreciate 🙏 you and your channel. Wishing you all the very best sir. You deserve it! 😊
  • @TheStingator
I can say without any doubt that the combination of increased performance and improved graphic output I have seen since trying out the settings today is astonishing! This is the biggest single improvement I have seen in the sim since I started using it two years ago. Amazing! After just a half-hour of tweaking, its like I'm using a monster PC or an entirely different sim. Certainly an eye-opening experience. You deserve a proper congratulations for bringing our attention to this. Wow, and thanks so much!!
  • Varun , your Western Australian Captain, Again so well thought out I have struggled with these settings for a while now congratulations " The legend steps in again " and throws a life jacket to people like myself so good to catch up my trusted friend. Sincere best wishes Captain M.N. retired Robert.
  • This is a pretty good guide and I appreciate your tinkering abilities. After following fs2020 simmers and q8pilot I noticed that my decent pc was suffering with low fps, stutters etc. They were essentially providing advice that was not helping me. In fact, one of the channels used your advice on A.filtering and setting it to 16x in the NVCP vs the sim. Funny that it happened after you made a video. Good work here. I agree with the philosophy that less is more. Their advice (I should have known better) was not helpful for me. Instead, I reset everything to default and high performance and I get my FPS back. So again, thank you. I appreciate when people like you take the time and are honest about their PC and results. Not all of us have ridiculous monster computers.
  • I've been using the sim for over a year, the difference with your settings is quite astonishing and so much better. As I have a 3060ti the only setting I had different was the TAA to the DLSS sampling due to a bit of judder, now it's very smooth and the extra detail is amazing, even quality smooth clouds, thanks very much.
  • @chaxef
I have to say thanks a million for this settings guide. I followed your settings to the T (dialing back on the discrepancies :)) and have been slowly adjusting back to where I was except for a few very important changes to improve the sharpness and overall quality as suggested by you. I suffered greatly from lag and stuttering and the real change for me happened in the Nvidia control panel anisotropic filter change. A literal game changer. Many thanks!
  • You sir, are a graphics settings genius. I just bought a new pc with an I7-12700k and Rtx4070 card, moved my sim over to it and the graphics were shocking. Used the tweaks in your video and now it looks amazing. You've got yourself one more subscriber here.
  • @surfshop7552
Fantastic, the one that did it for me was switching the Anisotropic filtering off in the SIM and on in Nvidia, this improved my LOD radius significantly.
  • Brilliant work. Comprehensive but simple. It hasn't helped my severe stutters since Update 11 came along, but it has vastly improved my Display quality. Massive improvement, though fps remains about the same at 45-50 fps. The best part of all your work is that you have gone to the trouble to explain what each setting actually does, and I haven't seen anyone else do that, so I will continue to tweak settings now with more knowledge now of what they actually do within the sim. I could not find the "UserConfig.opt" file anywhere on my system. Searched the whole of my C drive SSD, and my D drive "Scratch" SSD ( which had remnants of the many previous MSFS re-installations I have done. ) I download from MS each time ( takes about 6-8 hours as my cable internet here in Sydney is slowish at 50mbps), and I seem to need to do it every 3 months. But alas, the stutters are still with me. I always run MSFS in Admin mode to remove other programs and updates butting in, I have removed the Rolling Cache entirely, and removed many programs from the "startup" list. Nothing really helps. All my drivers are right up to date, I have repasted the CPU and GPU, re-filled the AIO chamber etc. I undervolt the GPU a little to keep temps down and remove any chance of throttling, and have set a temperature limit of 80 degrees C on the GPU. Nothing gets rids of those damn stutters. Up until Update 9 or 10, I never had them at all. I agree that TAA is better than DLSS 2, and with most of your reasoning on other matters , though I am certainly no expert like you and not qualified to agree or disagree. My system : Ryzen 7-5800X, Nvidia RTX 3080 (OEM version not FE), 3 x 2tb SSD, 1 x 8TB HDD, MSI X570S Max Wifi motherboard, ! x 32inch Xaimo curved monitor running at 144mhz refresh rate , and 1 x old crappy 12 inch moniitor for diagnostic and monitoring programs and ATC and Nav sub-menus. Thanks again. You are Gold Standard.
  • @aviator268rb
Unlike other persons, when you looked at each item in the settings, you gave enough explanation to share exactly what aspect of the simulator it affects and with that - you have my vote! thank you I shall try these settings and make tweaks if necessary. :washhands::washhands:✔✔
  • I use to play MSFS 2004 with 128MB GPU on my Intel Core 2 Duo. But couldn't continue when I stepped in the professional life. But now resuming back, your video has made thought process so easy. I'm about to get a System with Intel i7 14th Gen 14700K and Gigabyte 4070ti OC with Water Cooled 64GB DDR5 RAM and 1Tb SSD. Keep up the good work, you have got one more subscriber.
  • @RhettKelly
I don’t often comment but today your settings guide has transformed my sim - with both stunning visual and performance improvements. It’s not often in life where you get both. Thank you so much. I had been battling to get my sim into a sweet spot and you’ve nailed it. I would like to say that I ended up turning off the global image rescaling as my screen is 1440p and turning it on produced some shimmering / anti aliasing issues which didn’t look right. Turning off the resizing in the nvidia control panel did not affect the performance and kept the visuals looking phenomenal.
  • @stefstaf
I was lucky enough to have the same spec PC with you, so your settings made ALL the difference to my experience as I was struggling to find the optimum setup. Thank you!
  • Thank you for this very elaborated and well produced video, mate. A small advice for you, that I got from a guy who has much knowledge concerning VSync ( he is a technical Skyrim modder who makes performance and bug fixing mods): even with a GSync monitor you should have VSync on in your driver settings (not the game‘s). He sets it to „adaptive sync“ and „force on“ using NVidia inspector. It works well complementing the monitor‘s sync in those fps ranges where GSync doesn‘t work well. But if you‘re not experiencing screen tearing forget about it….. 😁👏👍 PS: artificial blurring (like motion blur, DoF) is unnecessary for me: I can always remove my glasses to achieve this effect without a single fps loss 🤪
  • Thank you so much! My PC now runs MSFS 2020 as smooth as silk with fantastic clarity! My system is a scratch-built PC (8 years old), Intel i7 with 16MB RAM and an Nvidia 3060 with 12MB RAM running the latest driver and using 4K resolution. The two tweaks using the Nvidia control panel worked wonders without any fuss. FYI: I went through the 2020 FSER's YouTube channel that made countless changes to the Windows settings and the Nvidia control panel which gave my system severe stuttering. For the first time since MSFS 2020 was released, I can fully enjoy the sim without building a new PC nor purchasing another graphic card! Thanks again!!!!!!
  • @some-UK-bloke
These changes have made the sim so much more playable for me, on an old GTX 1080 ti, seriously the improvement is so noticable. A big thankyou.
