As of 2023, Meta’s Llama models are open source, which means anyone can access them for free and what’s most important is that they can modify and redistribute their own versions of Llama without Meta’s explicit permission.

This allows for tremendous freedoms. It enables anyone in the world to take Llama and customize it to their own needs, fine-tune it, train it on their own data sets. You don’t need a data center to do this. It’s doable on consumer-grade hardware.

In contrast, the rest of the big tech is gambling on the believe there will always be enough paying customers. And freely available open source AI is an obstacle to that strategy. So where they can’t win in free market, they turn to the government.

for those tech giants, open source is a catchup mechanism when they are behind other companies, not an ideological choice
  • @TonyRule
Blink twice if you're being held hostage, The Hated One.
  • They are not your friends and never will be. People rarely change. Trust no one from the establishment. Ever.
  • @Pattern_Noticer
They only did this because when AI code got leaked the open source community in a matter of days and without billion dollar server rooms had built better AI than Faceberg. Faceberg was way behind with little hope of catching up to their competitors until a serendipitous code leak and the open source community got them back on track in no time. He just wants free labour. Once they're ahead he will make the new version closed source once more. That is unless the android has finally become human, grown a heart and conscience and is the world's first AGI. In which case welcome and why not take the old Google motto.

How come the "Uncensored" version of the LLaMa3 model still won't tell me a Polish joke?
  • @andreylucass
I give it 3 years before they change everything you've praised.
  • Zuck knows that, if he wants to take the market and create a product that isn't just another AI, he has to do things differently. Zuck is smart, greedy, but smart. He isn't open-sourcing his AI out of the kindness of his hart, he is doing it, so that the community helps him create a better AI and catch up with the big AI models. He has always played 4 d chess.
  • @chbrules
I've run LLaMa 2 and 3. They're fantastic. Local LLMs are the future. We can't have cloud-hosted garbage that spies on us.
  • @iTK98
    "however ..." CUT. great editing.
  • @shadowdragon3521
I never thought we'd be living in a timeline where I'm unironically rooting for Mark Zuckerberg of all people
  • @lostgps3005
He starts looking more human then becomes based.
  • @NolaanOne
LLAMA is not opensource because the weights are not given. Weights are the source code.
  • @hydrilara
Once a mischief, always is, No matter how lacking in tech the other options to zuck tech are, never go to use the zuck tech. You do not drink poison even when you are thirsty.
  • @fersuremaybek756
it's a solid move by zuck against competition and seems to work well at buying favorability. best to make use out of it before something happens in the future to stop it or limit it.
