Russia-West prisoner swap: Freedom of “innocents” outweighs punishing Russian hitman, Scholz says

Amid controversy, German officials have explained their “difficult” decision to release Kremlin hitman Vadim Krasikov as part of a deal with Russia, the U.S. and other Western counties in the largest prisoner swap since the end of the Cold War.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said the state’s interest in seeing Krasikov punished “had to be weighed against the danger to the bodies and in some cases the lives of innocent people in prison in Russia and political prisoners.”

Krasikov was serving a life sentence for murdering a Georgian citizen in a Berlin park in 2019.

Between the seven participating nations, 24 prisoners were freed, including members of the German opposition, Wall Street Journalist Evan Gershkovich and Canadian-American ex-Marine Paul Whelan.

While many Russians were happy to have Krasikov — who is often considered a hero and “real patriot” — back in the “motherland,” some German’s felt swapping a “hardcore criminal” for reporters and politicians was a “compromise” to save “innocent lives.”

  • What about the freedom and well-being of his future victims? Don't they count for anything? Or did you think he would immediately become an upstanding member of the community?
