Welcome back! This week is kind of an emotional roller coaster as I get back into the dissertation after a couple of weeks away from it. I give some updates about how I'm thinking about embodiment and multimodality, I celebrate a friend, and I show some real and honest emotions.

11:51 You getting emotional about moving and locations of jobs when going on the market is so relatable❤ When I was going on the market, I made a list of locations that were off limits and criteria for jobs I applied to. I created a matrix of jobs options including “none of the above” and rated each opportunity against the criteria. Some criteria seemed practical for getting a job and others were purely emotional/intuitive. I even had a criteria for my gut reaction/ does it pass the vibe test.
  • I am currently applying to grad school, and I completely understand the emotions you experienced and discussed. It is so overwhelming and stressful, and worrying about not getting in to a “good” grad program because everyone is questioning why you want a degree in English anyway doesn’t help. Thank you for being so honest and saying everything I feel.
  • oh my love. as an academic in Florida, from Florida, I FEEL THIS IN MY SOUL. There WILL be jobs that you LOVE the idea of in a year. There WILL be more than enough in Florida. But there are always airports and fun locations to explore with your family together.

Thank you so much for sharing your feels around job hunting in academia. I’m not even in the job market yet (I’m my 4th year and deciding to do 6), but also have been feeling really overwhelmed in anticipation for it. I feel you! haven’t seen your latest updates yet, but sending good luck and vibes your way! And congrats on the nomination!! 🎉

I usually say feed 2 birds with one piece of bread. I’ve always thought that saying was very violent since I was a child. Those poor birds in the original saying :(

ok so I thought the exact same thing literally two days ago re: the "kill two birds with one stone" phrase. What I came up with to say instead is "attract two cats with one can of tuna"--I feel like that is much nicer

My partner always says “get two birds stoned at once” which I think is hilarious and way less aggressive hahaha
