For as hyped as this game has been since it came out, I never took the time to beat it until now. Join me as I give my thoughts on it 17 years later.

Clunky? It was a more elegant game, for a more civilized time.

I think HK-47 is my favorite RPG companion ever. "Meat bags" has never been the same since.
  • Internet: "Do you want to watch a feature length film regarding a 18 year old game" Me: "Where do I sign!"
  • @GlennDavey
KOTOR is as much "Star Wars" to me as the movies. In every way it delivers a Star Wars story. When you go back to the other media you have a more fleshed out understanding of the world from having experienced KOTOR.
  • @toadofsteel
The twist of the player being Revan was our generation's "I am your father". I actually managed to not pick up on it back when I was a teenager, so it was absolutely mind-blowing at the time.

Definition: 'Love' is making a shot to the knees of a target 120 kilometres away using an Aratech sniper rifle with a tri-light scope. ... Yet for me, love is knowing your target, putting them in your targeting reticle, and together, achieving a singular purpose... against statistically long odds...” HK-47

I always thought Bastilla lectures you so often on the Darkside because she feels its pull so keenly, and is terrified of it. Her sanctimonious attitude is a self defense mechanism.

"It desperately needs a remake - probably the one that it'll never get." Famous last words.
  • @zenny8877
I find it really cool how he complains about how ineffective the council is, and that's a major plot point of kotor 2
  • @093Megaman
Wait did he do the entire Malak fight without destroying the jedi tanks himself? No wonder he didn't like it that would take forever.
  • As an ex-army guy, I can tell you the Jedi council has the same problems as any commanding force. You can't send them in directly because the knowledge, experience and leadership is too valuable to risk losing in some battle (that could be fought by a larger group of slightly less capable fighters who are told what to do). But at the same time, that disconnect from conditions on the ground make real time decisions less impactful and accurate.

My favorite aspect of KOTOR 1 is how you don't need to know a damn thing about Star Wars to understand what's happening; it's explained to the player as if they've never watched the movies.
  • @zaknew2878
I would seriously recommend playing KOTOR 2 with the Restored Content Mod after this, not least of all because the KOTOR 2 actively agrees with your criticism of the Jedi Council.

"The undercity looks like an unfinished beta map" You gotta keep in mind that this was top-tier graphics at the time it came out. I remember my desktop STRUGGLING to run this game. They had to keep the polygon count low, so parts will look "unfinished", it's unavoidable for the technology of the time. Also, when you complain that the planets aren't big enough - keep in mind that when this game came out, CDs were total garbage. This game took up 4 disks!!! The game world was one of the biggest EVER made.

Finishes Kashyyk: Finally, no more Wookiespeak! Arrives on Manaan: fishyfishyfishy
  • @sirmicah
Everyone knows the only way to play this game is hitting on Bastila every 5 seconds.
  • @averyodowd6448
You fighting the first boss: So I switch between my party members a lot for maximum tactical impact. Me fighting the first boss: *puts down 20 mines before opening the door.*
  • I saw "BIOWARE'S CLUNKY MASTERPIECE" in the thumbnail and my first thought was "ok, which one?"
  • @Fordo007
KOTOR was the first RPG I played as a kid and the fact I could have friendships and relationships with companion characters was mind blowing for me. Bastila still feels like a childhood girlfriend looking back on it.
