Metal Slug was a big part of my childhood and heavily influenced my taste in action games. In this video, I try to describe why that's the case.

As a Mexican, Metal Slug/NeoGeo/SNK speaks to me on another level, we love their games so much. My grandparents in Mexico had small stores nearby and almost all of them had multiple arcade machines or (somehow) store kiosks with modded Xboxes emulating games. Every kid/teen in the area knew about all those games

People are into the Tactics spinoff because it has actually good sprites, it's not another gacha game, and the people behind it seem to be Metal Slug fans.
  • @SIMIFU
This series is still Peak sprite animation to me. It so detailed and lively.

As someone who has slowly lost their twitch reaction for high reaction games like Metal Slug, I'm actually pretty exited for the strategy game.

As a quote unquote “real” metal slug fan, I actually am excited for the tactics game. I know turn based strategy is the furthest possible thing from the series’ core gameplay, but I like the genre and I’m interested to see how things translate over. I feel like you were pretty unnecessarily hostile toward it, considering it’s been made clear that A- Tactics is not a mainline entry and is not the direction the series is going in, and B- The team working on it are experienced devs, and longtime fans of the series.

Metal slug 3’s zombie stage was the bruciest thing in the history of bruce

I mean who doesn't? Great gameplay, fun characters, sweet tunes, god-tier sprite animation (Like damn, to this day I am taken aback by how slick it looks), and some of the greatest sound effects put to arcades. Even if the gameplay isn't your style you have to give it at least some respect, and admiration for all of its qualities; though that point holds for the grand majority of SNK games. To this day I will only say rocket launcher, as if it was RAWKET LAWNCHA!!!

This was also big in Brazil. I remember going to an event, finding the machine of this game, and playing over and over until it was time to go home.

31:03 as a metal slug fan, we are just really desperate. Ok, now jokes aside, we are mostly excited because it’s an actual entry in the franchise with care put into it. It isn’t looking for our money like MSA, and it isn’t made by tencent. We understand that it’s just a spin off, it’s not like it’s called metal slug 8, it’s literally called “metal slug tactics”. Another thing is that SNK said that they wished to make a new “proper” metal slug game a while back. The tactics game is a good sign of this because it shows us that making said game is probably still in their radar

I am a massive metal slug fan and I am excited for tactics. The atmosphere, characters and "story" are just as beloved as the gameplay of the original games and I love seeing the characters again in a new and interesting way.

As a Brazilian guy living in Japan for about 16 years, I gotta say: both in Japan and Brazil, back then, Metal Slug was gigantic! Every game center/arcade had at least one copy of the game. About Metal Slug 3, the final mission is the most insane stage I ever saw in a game to this day! It's beautifully designed and every single second is a true survival ordeal. And the whole mission takes almost an entire hour to finish! And when you finish it, it's like you are an '80s action movie hero, only needing to lit up a cigar and relax. This mission even goes far to build how they introduce the final battle. First you fight the boss of MS1, then goes to space, face the boss from MS2, then fights the boss of this game. And after you defeat him, you run away from the ship, only to face him in the skies. Let me tell you, when the music of the final mission from MS1 starts to play, that was epic! Now we knew it was the true final battle! It was about to end and only one side would survive! Oh, man! I could talk about this final stage for hours! Anyway, here in Japan, Metal Slug 6 was not released to PS4, so, I'd stick for the PS3 version. Hope they release the whole package in physical form , someday (not the PS2 version, though) including the XX version. And a proper Metal Slug 8!!
  • I agree with everything you said except 31:01 its a spin off and it looks high quality, just because this game exist doesnt mean there won't be a metal slug 8
  • @RoseDeDax
My love for metal slug has grown overtime to the point I bought a fighting stick controller just to relive those memories of playing metal slug back in Mexico . Such a lovely time

I would forever love the hand painted backgrounds in their games. It's like, you could just literally take them out of the game and use it as an actual wallpaper background or painting. My favourite had to be the one in Metal Slug's 2nd level after defeating Tiny Bata. That beautiful overlooking view of the city and the clouds on that bridge, stuck with me ever since. Really, gave me Ghibli vibes.

Ran my PSP dead trying to beat these games.
  • Hearing that SNK made the cheaper arcade machines makes so much sense now. Im from South Africa and this was the only game worth playing at my local arcade.
  • Im excited for tactics because i've fully accepted that they're never gonna make another mainline entry in run n gun, and tactics will be (should be) more of the Metal Slug world and design stuff that i'm actually pretty interested in. The psuedo world war 2 asthetic but with aliens n stuff. At this point, I will be happy for anything, ANYTHING Metal Slug related that isn't another pretty boobie lady you can pull from a slot machine in a mobile game.
  • @Luizinhu
Here in Brazil SNK fighting games were so popular! I'm not really into it but I believe many fighting games fans in here played a lot of KOF, Art of fighting, Fatal fury etc
  • @TrickyJebus
what tickled my fancy mostly about metal slug is that the sudden betrayal of enemies and what once was enemies now taking your side to fight the betrayal. when the aliens turned on the rebels on Metal Slug X it got me really hooked then in Metal Slug 6 again! when both the aliens and Rebels are now teaming up with us to fight the other aliens. it felt revolutionary to me.

Omg this game brings me back, when I was younger we used to live in LA, my mom would take me to the laundry mat, where she would leave me watching the clothes, as she ran other errands. And she'd give me a bit of quarters, there was a few cabinets there. One of the was metal slug. I remember have the same feeling trying to never die, beat the game flawlessly to get that high score and put my 3 digit sign on my score. I'd sometimes watch others play when I didn't have coins and I learned a few tricks and secrets that way. How I miss those days.
