आज ओम बिरला को लोकसभा का नया स्पीकर ध्वनिमत से चुन लिया गया। ओम बिरला का यह लगातार दूसरा कार्यकाल है। इस दौरान प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी, लोकसभा में नेता विपक्ष राहुल गांधी और सदन के अन्य सदस्यों ने भी ओम बिरला को स्पीकर चुने जाने की बधाई दी। इस दौरान सपा मुखिया अखिलेश यादव ने कुछ ऐसा कहा, जिस पर सदन के कई सदस्य खिलखिलाकर हंस पड़े।
