Apple TV 4K (2017) Vs Gen 2 (2021) - Small But Noticeable Upgrade

I have never seen a comparison between 2017 and 2022 model years of the Apple TV. My 2017 model was getting old and I was having trouble with it. I bought the new 2022 model and it worked great until I noticed it got a bit warm. It is not vented like the 2017 model, but at least it is quite a bit better than my worn out 2017.

Thomas what settings do you recommend on the latest Apple TV 4K (2022). I have this settings atm: 4K SDR 50hz HDMI output: YCbCR Chroma: 4:4:4 Match content yes yes The picture quality is not good on my Q95T. The build in apps on tv is better picture quality. Viaplay, HBO etc.

Thanks for your great work , and made me decide to update to Apple tv 2nd gen. Now i need another apple tv 4k for bedroom, should i buy 2nd gen or 3rd gen? Is there better picture quality and sound quality on 3rd gen?

Thanks for this. The key take away is that there is a difference. Gen 2 is an upgrade.

Decided to upgrade as it’s at a whopping low price of $120 for 4k(2nd gen)32gb model. Wouldn’t have upgraded otherwise until the next apple tv but this deal was too good to pass up.

You should put the text in video to show which one is old one or new one.

Do you feel audio quality is the same or better cause I have the 2017 apple tv 4k and the audio is awful compared to LG tv apps or Xbox audio

I just got a new Apple TV 4K 2022. I’ve finished comparing it to my old 2017 model and yes, it feels a bit faster but the image quality is absolutely the same in a LG C1. I absolutely can’t replicate what you are saying in this video. Both can play exactly the same formats and Dolby vision is exactly the same between the two in all apps I’ve tested (Apple TV movies, streaming platforms, Plex, Apple TV+, etc). My tv is professionally calibrated. If you don’t have an HDR10+ tv it’s just not worth it to upgrade your older Apple TV 4K. There is just no need for ir until Apple decides to properly support all Dolby vision profiles and add audio passthrough. The old one will do just fine.

for an HD Tv slightly older… would you pick 2017 or 2021?

Found this quite an interesting video indeed, I’ve been using the ATV4K 1st gen since release and have only just recently upgraded to the more recent 2022 3rd gen model. Just wondering if you plan on doing another video comparing all three models?

It's just matter of blending ,you got to have high end tv with new apple tv on order to get the best and noticeable results if you running to low end tv you won't notice the difference
