What is the purpose of that, funny looking, spiral in the centre of the Jet engine on modern aircraft? Why am I not allowed to walk under the wings while Boarding?
These are some of the questions that I will be answering in todays video so make sure you stay glued to the video until the end!

Yes. This explained very well why airplane technicians never wear cape.
  • That sound effect that he had when he talked about the risk of ingestion was priceless!!

I am not a pilot, don't know much about planes, and hardly ever fly, but I find your presentations very informative, entertaining, and the fact you use "down to earth" layman's terms! Great job there and you're a wonderful young man. Good Luck!
  • I think I am honestly worried for the species when someone thinks "I am going to light my Marlboro with a jet engine".

How am I supposed to light my cigarette now.

One addition, as I’ve been working as ground service for some years during my study time: we used the signal pylons under each wing tip to prevent any vehicle driving to close to the wing. The wing tip distance is easy to miscalculate, when you’re sitting in the vehicle, especially if you have low installed wings, so the signal pylon helps a lot.

I think this pilot is bloody brillant and id love him to be my pilot... So friendly calming and nice
  • I feel like you just have to appreciate the fact that there was an actual absolute mad lad who tried to light his cig from the exhaust of a jet engine! :D

Best use of a wilhelm scream I've heard in years. You've just gotten another sub!
  • They should also paint spirals on the back of the engines so as to warn ground personnel not to get close and risk being hit by people who have been ingested from the other side.

The fuel vent thing is also why passengers don't board through rear doors during refueling. Fuel will spray quite a distance with the pressures used to refuel. (I used to work aircraft maintenance and have seen this more than once.)

What a great attitude this gentleman has and so much knowledge. Thank you.

thank you so much for explaining the spiral. I sat inside a plane many times wondering what they meant. Great video.
  • The spiral on the Nosecone is a German Luftwaffe invention; as in service on dirt and grass airstrips the paint on propeller blade tips wears off quickly, they did not paint the blade tips but painted the propeller spinners with a variety of color-schemes, the black and white spiral being extremely common. It was called the "Kullernase". Regards from Alaska!
