Ukraine basically pulled an old school "Age of Empires" move on Russia. When a border is totally unprotected, even the smallest invasion force can cause critical damage. Late 1990's strategy games modeled that perfectly.

Ukraine taking control of Russia's main logistic railroad supplying its troops north of Kharkiv & taking control of Russia's main Nat Gas supply node to Europe can't be overstated in importance.
