National Geographic explorer and storm chaser Tim Samaras devoted his life to unlocking the mysteries of extreme weather. Along with his son, Paul, and storm chaser Carl Young—his longtime collaborators—he died in a tornado in El Reno, Oklahoma, on May 31, 2013. "The Last Chase" examines that mammoth storm, and reflects on Samaras's life and legacy through the words of people he knew and worked with.

We know that Tim, Paul, And Carl did not die in vain. Their research led to improved warning times and has saved countless lives. Godspeed Twistex, you will never be forgotten.
  • @Eggemeyers
So sad for them. But it is at least bittersweet that they died doing what they love - and together.
  • Tim, Paul, and Carl....... remembering you in 2023 as we are in the midst of a tornado outbreak. May will mark 10 years already since your passing. Rest peacefully knowing you surely have provided a lasting legacy and will never be forgotten.

I'm only 14 now... him and a movie called Twister made me love Tornadoes ever since I was 3... he was my childhood hero and the person that made me want to be a storm chaser. R.I.P.
  • I don't know these people, but knowing they dedicated their lives to science, to tornado research, just makes me feel sore about their passing. Long live these heroes!
  • Tim Samaras was extremely safety conscious. I remember when he would look at Dr. Reed Timmer at times and shake his head. Reed was the daredevil. Tim was Mr. Safety. Therefore, this tornado really did the unexpected in order for it to take the lives of Tim, Paul, and Carl. RIP gentlemen. You all are still missed in 2019.

I ran into Tim at a Boise City motel after a chase day around 2004. He didn't know me, but acted like we were childhood friends and invited me and my gf into his room to watch the vid he had shot that day. As nice a guy as I have ever met. RIP Tim, Paul and Carl.

I remember getting out of my cellar and getting the news. I have never been more upset in my entire life. I looked up to Tim. He was a great role model. Rest in piece.

Nat Geo, thank you for this short clip. An hour long special would be superb to help the world understand what Tim, Paul and Carl were doing. Tim's work has helped save lives. It makes me so very sad that he died in the pursuit of further knowledge. I hope his remaining family are being cared for.  We all owe Tim, Paul and Carl a debt of gratitude. Rest in peace, guys.

Storm chasers was one of my favorite shows when I was in elementary school. I live in Pennsylvania so we don’t get many tornadoes around here. One day I was rushing so I wouldn’t be late for school and the weather was on (I never listen to the news). Once I heard twistex, I stopped dead in my tracks a turned around to watch the news. So upsetting. He was one of the safest storm chasers. That El Reno tornado was just so unpredictable.

This is what happen to good people. Sad thing is they die when they are doing what they love most. Tim was killed by a tornado same as Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray.
  • Hard to believe that today marks the 10 year anniversary. RIP Twistex. Tim, Paul, and Carl were some of my childhood inspirations.
  • @FelixWheatfield
As an amateur newbie chaser who's just getting started, that last clip broke my heart. "...Finish out the mission after I'm long gone." We're doing this for you, Tim. We're doing this for you, Paul, Carl, and many others.
