A boat of interest connected to the death of a 15-year-old girl who was struck and killed while waterskiing in Biscayne Bay over the weekend has been found, authorities said Tuesday.

A boat matching the description of the one that struck and killed Ella Riley Adler Saturday afternoon was in custody and its owner was cooperating with the investigation, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said Tuesday.

  • I never enjoyed water sking because of this exact fear. Everybody is either Drunk or underage...(or both). Bless that child's heart!

"Boat of interest"? Well damn, if the boat is sitting on the dock of that house, shouldn't there be a person of interest that owns the boat?
  • @stellarwind1946
The boat is refusing to answer questions and has demanded to speak with an attorney.

Did she say that police were 'escorting' the boat? Isn't that going a little overboard?

Instead automatically assuming the driver is guilty - I'm curious if the they were even aware that they hit someone with how massive that vessel is.

The boat is keeping what it knows close to the hull, its contacted its lawyer and has come in for questioning. If it was a smaller boat the owner would be all over the news and already in jail.

Investigators with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on Tuesday located a boat in Coral Gables that they say struck and killed a 15-year-old Ransom Everglades student off Key Biscayne’s Nixon Beach last weekend. The boat was docked on Tuesday behind the home of Carlos and Magaly at the homeowners waterfront neighborhood of Hammock Oaks, which abuts Matheson Hammock Park and is just south of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. FWC investigators seized the boat Tuesday afternoon; they have not identified the boat’s driver. (Miami Herald)

The boat towing her should have had an orange flag up, indicating a skier was in the water. Other nearby boats should be looking for orange flags, to give them room as a safety margin. Throw alcohol into the mix, and all bets are off...

Now the question is? Were the operators aware of hitting the victim? It's highly probable that they were not.
  • After all is said this is a terrible tragedy. There will be many questions left unanswered. How far back behind the boat was the girl when she was hit? A lifevest only keeps your head above the water and in the choppy waters last Saturday she would be very hard to see. It seems to me they have made a big deal about the boat that hit her where nothing has been mentioned about the reckless Tow boat operator. As someone who grew up waterskiing on Nixon Beach, you would have to be crazy to ski there on a Saturday with the amount of boat traffic. A boat the size of the one that hit her and the power of the motors on a choppy water day would not have missed a beat and probably never felt anything.

If the Boat owner lawyers up…. it’s gonna be impossible to charge someone
  • Boat is refusing to answer any questions and requesting a lawyer. Local boats in the area are remaining silent and docked.

This new information makes one wonders: The man who owns the home where investigators found a boat that they suspect struck and killed a 15-year-old Ransom Everglades student was behind the wheel at the time of the crash, according to a report released Wednesday by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Carlos Guillermo, 78, owns the Coral Gables home where the boat was docked behind when FWC agents seized the boat Tuesday afternoon. He was the only occupant in the boat at the time of the hit-and-run crash, the report said. (Miami Herald)
  • It could be that no one saw the victim in the water. Incidentally, what was she doing water skiing in that area? The boat towing her needs to be made responsible for sure.
  • @sbdreamin
uh, the pull boat is not supposed to abandoned skiers. This can't be blamed on the boat that hit her. It's her pull boat's fault.

Im only commenting on my own experiances. I owned a 42 ft sports fisherman that had a gross weight of 23,000 pounds . This boat drew 4 ft of water to run and had to remain in the channel or would run aground. This vessel did not turn on a dime and was capable of running at 35 knots / 39 mph and at cruising speed of 26 knots / 29 mph took a few hundred yards to stop in an emergency. With that said I can not tell you how many teenagers and adults on Jet Skis. smaller ski tow boats, pontoon boat , and yes even kayaks would see me coming in the channel and intentionally cut in front or behind to ride the wake. Now Im not saying that is what happened, Im just sharing my experiances. If a person was in the water with just their head out of the water underway it woukd be very hard to see and stop. Hitting a big tree log in a boat this big often goes without noticed.
  • I've been water skiing. The folks on her boat may not have had the time to help her back on their boat before she was hit. And the color description of the boat that hit Ella has been ALL over the news. Why didn't the owner/driver of that boat come forward on their own if for no other reason than to eliminate themselves as suspects?!?
  • @dbnarizona
It will be interesting to find out if the tow boat for the skier had an observer monitoring the skier. If they did not, then that could have caused the accident. Once a skier falls, it is the job of the observer to immediately notify the boat driver to immediately turnaround and cover the skier in the water. If not, a lone skier in the water is very difficult to see and another boat could easily miss seeing a downed skier! 🤔
