How did Earth’s atmosphere form?

“No one knows of any other planet where you can do this simple thing.”

Earth’s atmosphere came from outer space, scientists find
www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/12/091210153538…
“The gases which formed the Earth's atmosphere -- and probably its oceans -- did not come from inside the Earth but from outer space, according to a new study.”

When did Earth’s oxygen atmosphere appear?
blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2009/03/21…
“In my book Death from the Skies!, I described Earth’s first mass extinction event: the evolution of bacteria that were able to ingest the primitive atmosphere of the time, and excrete oxygen.”

Atmosphere of the Planets
www.universetoday.com/35796/atmosphere-of-the-plan…
“We take our atmosphere on Earth for granted; it’s all around us.”

Where did the Earth’s atmosphere come from? Did it just somehow already have one when it formed, or pass through a gas cloud in space, or create its own gas somehow?

The Origin of Oxygen in Earth’s Atmosphere
www.scientificamerican.com/article/origin-of-oxyge…
“It's hard to keep oxygen molecules around, despite the fact that it's the third-most abundant element in the universe, forged in the superhot, superdense core of stars.”

How to Get an Atmosphere

Evolution Of The Atmosphere: Composition, Structure And Energy
www.globalchange.umich.edu/globalchange1/current/l…
“After loss of the hydrogen, helium and other hydrogen-containing gases from early Earth due to the Sun's radiation, primitive Earth was devoid of an atmosphere.”

Giant Impact That Formed The Moon Blew Off Earth’s Atmosphere
www.space.com/23031-moon-origin-impact-earth-atmos…
“The moon came into existence after several planet-size space bodies smashed into the nascent Earth one after the other, with the final one actually forming our satellite, while several impacts repeatedly blew off our planet’s atmosphere, according to a new study.”

Evolution of the Atmosphere

POV: your science teacher made you watch this
  • I love air so much i cant live without it. Kinda like the internet but less important!
  • @Onionbagel
It's videos like these that keep me subscribed to Dnews. Not those survey nonsense that you guys keep dishing out. (Not all of them are bad though). But these hardcore factual kind of videos, are wonderful. Keep on releasing these kind of vids Dnews!
  • @JCLlindo
Trace has the perfect voice for that bit at the start.
  • @Undecided_
Is it possible for humans to ever breathe another gas that wasn't as harmful as oxygen? It's literally rusting us inside out yet we need it every minute....
  • @TheDarkLegacy
This is crazy, you guys are always relevant. I just completed construction of a bioreactor that uses cyanobacteria to generate oxygen, but I never stopped to wonder why we breathe it in the first place. (5/5)
  • @trintyprince
I would love to see a video on the process of terraforming and how it can one day lead to us having a new planet we call home.
  • @MrPantz
Hey guys I love your videos , keep this great work going. My question is how did we came to life
  • @Daethlydemise
Hearing that you got this off Reddit doesn't surprise me. Everything ever is on there.
  • @rondayaram8816
I showed this to my high school students, I think their heads exploded with all this amazing info!!!
  • @Hanna-nu5sm
Where does Trace keep getting those awesome shirts?! Someone help me. I need shirts like those in my life!
  • @efviasnh
People just need to understand that there are things that people can't explain... even with science!
  • @maxhaggard
Loving "the space stuff"! See ya July 30th
  • @alvarosued3
Because weeee liiive and breaaathe, because you make me believe in myself when nobody else can help!
  • @shantanup.a1413
Trace can you a video about pain, why do we feel pain, what is its pathophysiology, what's the need to feel pain, & why people have different threshold to pains.
  • @Eddievargas1
Not sure if you’ve done it but do one on a couple planets that could be habitable or just the one similar to earth. Like one with similar gravitation/magnetic field, temp, size, atmosphere, etc. thanks Great video by the way
