The American HSTV-L light tank is probably the most controversial tank in War Thunder ground forces. It's a vehicle that I'm infamous for talking about a ton, so I figured I would play it again now that it's gone up to a battle rating of 11.0 without any historical reports being actioned. I've been communicating with Gaijin about buffing XM885, but it's been sporadic.

The Most Controversial Tank In War Thunder

Obligatory "Spookston try not to make an HSTV-L video challenge (Impossible)"
  • @Spaceballz123
The hstv-l is a great example of gaijin bias. Hstv-l sits at 11.0 with a penetration of 269 with 26 rounds while the 2s38 sits at 9.7 penetration of 221 with 148 rounds, proximity rounds, and irst tracking.
  • Shots 1-5: Clearly missed. Shots 6-9: Missed due to recoil (bad spray control). Shots 10-11: Very close, but recoil and inaccuracy make these reasonable misses.
  • @teatanks6481
Gaijin: Refuses to change the HSTVL ammo despite having overwhelming evidence proving them wrong Also Gaijin: buffs Russian tanks with zero sources or reason
  • @falfill2096
Imagine if they added the STRV 2000 into the game, basically a cross between an HSTV-L, CV90 with a 140mm gun, it would probably break top tier but it would be so cool to see it
  • @Martin-ot6kw
That bit about the devs going "Well we think" despite evidence to the contrary seems a theme with most people I know talking about their own experience bug reporting. Supposedly a similiar bit about MANPADs with them saying they can't be that agile because they're smaller than Sidewinders and other missiles. Per example.
  • @kadebass6187
The physics around destructible objects is wild. You’ll see videos of tanks going over cars with barely an issue (losing 5-10kmh of speed) and then when you do it in the same tank you lose half if not more of your speed
  • @hqwefg
OK here's what I don't get: Gaijin gaslights the playerbase into thinking it needs classified documents for bug reports, like the exact dimensions of the penetrator like you mentioned, and then acts surprised when the playerbase leaks classified documents.... Like they literally ask for it. Maybe if they actually listened to players and didn't require you to sneak into the Pentagon for bug reports THIS WOULDN'T HAPPEN!
  • @binkycatfish
That Face When 2S38 is 1.3 BR lower than the HSTV-L, while being equally good if not better
  • @fusilier3029
Honestly, your XM885 Rant section basically proves the whole reason why so many classified documents keep on getting leaked... Frankly, I'm going to start blaming the developers if it happens again, since it is pretty ridiculous that they won't listen to legal and practical research, causing people to go to such lengths...
  • @ross7872
11:56 Spookston: So you want unclassified documents from the military Gaijin: Yes Spookston: but you don’t want unclassified documents from the military Gaijin: Yes Spookston: visible confusion
  • @Hosenfuhrer
11:00 Gaijin: "Don't send us confidential documents" Also Gaijin: "Get exact cartridge dimensions from the military"
  • @morva4498
Hey Spookston you should play the 2S38 and compare the two vehicles.
  • I agree that this is not a bad tank. However the thing is that even when you are on the top of the skill celling - your performance would be still HEAVILY dependent on random. Current state XM885 should mean "inconsistancy" in any language around the world. You simply cannot rely on it. One time it will one-shot BVM at 1000 meters other time it won't set off the ammo that was directly hit from 50 meters. Every shot is like rolling a dice.
  • @thcfck6870
I play top tier US quite often and I must say that I relegated the HSTV-L to one of my last spawns, it's just so painfully inconsistent having to hit sometimes multiple times a single crew member, or just not penetrating at all breech areas or common weakspots due to the anemic shell, extremely painful.
  • @IShallNotFall
I love how you're slowly creeping closer and closer to meme thunder channels while still maintaining this level headed educational information delivery from you're old videos.
  • You should play the Italian M41M 90/53. Weird chassis but the gun is simply a joy to shoot.
  • I just gotta mention it. I ALWAYS wait eagerly for your videos. You put them online around my dinner time and I love just watching them when eating so much that I sometimes wait a bit just in case or keep videos unwatched for a while so I can get food. Idk what it is, I don’t even play war thunder, but something about your content is just incredibly entertaining. Thank you
  • @cinnamonoa
2S38 is 9.7 and isn't just a fast firing light tank, it's also an AA with a 57mm proxy shell and IRST
