What is a Blanket Prize?

The sport of shooting the old-time muzzleloaders began during the 1930’s when people who enjoyed shooting at a mark, found it too costly to shoot modern firearms and their cartridges. They pulled out granddads old rifle, dusted it off, and joined with others doing the same thing, in friendly competition and sport. The events quickly formalized and became social gatherings where a person with a good rifle and steady aim could take home a portion of the beef or hog that was being divided for prizes. Today 1. Each person puts a prize on the blanket. Ten (10 shooters, ten (10) prizes, one shooter and one prize.2. The shoot is held.3. After the shoot, each shooter, from the top shooter to the lowest goes to the blanket in order and selects the prize that they like. 4. Thus, each shooter wins something for their efforts from shooting. It can really be fun when all the prizes are handmade. It's even nicer when the normal winner(s) selects something toward the bottom of the offerings and lets the nice things go to those who really need a nice handmade item. The reward ceremony can be a lot of fun if the spirit is in your group, what you win at as a blanket prize is priceless, because it serves as a reminder of good times with good folks. And you earnt it!
