A Totally Tubular Lock Lesson (my Presentation and Workshop from DEF CON 31)

Wow, this took a LOT of editing time! While I'm glad that we recorded my talk in the TOOOL Lockpick Village, as you can see in the first minute of footage in that room, the projector screen was totally blown out and not visible in the recording I snagged. So, like a complete crazy person, I exported all of my PowerPoint to individual images and then superimposed them over the captured footage in post-production. Y'all know my absolute lack of production skills, so this was a ton of effort... for a video that about 12 of you are going to watch. πŸ˜‚

In any case, I'm really happy that I had such a packed house and a kind audience both for my lecture and the subsequent hands-on session the next day. Thank you to EVERYONE who came up and said hi to me at Black Hat and DEFCON, you're all marvelous and it was wonderful meeting each and every one of you.

We learn about tubular locks, some fun history, a couple of good stories, and then at a table I discuss how to approach lock research if you get your hands on some unknown hardware.

Enjoy! πŸ‘πŸ˜πŸ‘

I like how every deviant talk inevitably turns into a talk about elevators

I work in the "opposite" field from you. I have to maintain security. I swear, one of these days I may see you on one of my cameras, you reside in my region. (I hope to catch you.) I have learned much from your videos. I have been involved in lock sport for 40 years, and learn more every time I see one of your videos, even when they are retelling the same story. From social engineering to physical security. Thanks.

I can't speak for everyone here but for me: I am not insecurity (physical or otherwise) and I have no plans on becoming a physical security expert. That said, I'm always interested in learning why things that most people take for granted are the way they are and how they work generally. I also got in trouble for latch slipping in middle school because our teacher was late to class, the door was locked, and the gap between the door and the frame was so large I literally used a pencil to open the door and get everyone in the classroom while the teacher had to use their key to get inside and had no idea how we got in there until someone told them I opened the door. Your chill attitude and practical responses to problems you see is always nice to see. I love technically correct answers, but I also love seemingly kludge but simple fixes like the closet brackets to protect from under door attacks.

Dev, your long talks are the best... teaching a blind man to pick a lock was.. well, there are no words to describe just how awesome that was to watch
  • @MakeItHackin
My friends and I went through a fire exit in order to sneak close enough to get a seat on the floor near the front of the room. Great talk!
  • @bevis71
1:51:25 is this a blind person?? If it is - fck me - she's above everything. I cannot imagine how a blind person can understand what we can see - just by a touch and words. Amazing.

Thanks again so much for getting Totally Tubular with us! Always a pleasure to have you come by the village 🧑

Nothing makes the day better than a random defcon talk dropping when you aren't expecting it

Church uses a tubular lock for their left over Eucharist. "its secure enough to show its important, but loose enough anyone can get to it."
  • @PhinkTink
since your defcon16 presentation video i'm hooked, whenever an opportunity comes up to tell people about physical (in)security i pull out the link to "i'll let myself in" and each and every time i'm enjoying it.

Hey Sidepocket here. It was so incredibly frustrating to have to cancel out at the last minute going to Defcon. I had to miss a lot of things but this was honestly why the things I was most looking forward to seeing. So even though I couldn't make it there in person, thank you so much for recording it and I hope to finally see this entire circus next year!
  • @ceefusjenkins2281
I'm sad I missed your talk. The lock pick village was fairly hidden. Hopefully next year is a bit more organized; there was some controlled chaos this year.
  • @poil27
so nice of you explaining and leting the blind girl toutch the locks parts so she could undersand what you where alking about.
  • @measter
We love to watch the long form videos because you're generous enough to share your knowledge with us. Sometimes cons and classes are too far away or too costly and your generosity gives us access to information we might not otherwise have access to.
  • @aettic
Really appreciated the demonstration at the end about how to research a tubular lock. I feel like it applies to many subjects - try, don't be afraid to fail but be prepared to start over, learn something each time, don't get discouraged, and be curious and persistent.
  • @jeffzanin5503
Realy cool espeically watching Sue's hands sensing the parts and what you were doing.
  • I needed to open a security box at work today and i though " what would Ollam say? So i went for the ever so exposed hinges and had that sucker open in about 12 seconds πŸ‘
  • @knewt_uk
The talk was just great as always (love me a new Deviant talk), but that last segment with the practical investigation of the lock was absolutely amazing 🧑
