How can a song - written by a perfect stranger - feel as if it were written about you? Composer/artist/producer Claudio explains her art, purpose and technique, and finishes with an exclusive unveiling of her new track: "I was a Rockstar".

In her solo live performances, Claudio creates and orchestrates songs with complex layering in real-time using music technology. To her, the art is in making sure both the technology and technique are driven by the heart - and achieve a delicate balance between control and instinct.

Rachel Claudio is a Perth-born/European-based artist/composer/singer/producer and university lecturer. She works with major labels and composes scores for film and TV. Her live video performances have captured the hearts and minds of millions of viewers.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

"It doesn't create the sadness. The thing is that we carry the sadness already" Sista, I felt that.

"music has this unparalleled ability to take all of one's pain, pull it into a single frame and invite us to relive it with all of the joy of the experience and none of the suffering" wow!

I remember watching this when it came out. Entranced by her and her artistic ability - desiring more than anything to be able to do what she does. Here I am, watching it 4 years later, and I have my own set-up and am producing / writing my own music on a daily basis. The connection to source through this solitude is very pure. She's incredible in her expression.

Her vocabulary was outstanding. Her word choice used to express her thought was so elegant and refined.

This explains why I've always felt like I could understand people with similar musical taste much more than the others. It's like souls meeting and vibrating together on the same frequency.

I think a reason why the audience was so deadpan is that these are hard concepts for people who don't write music to understand. Her statement on a single note having the final word is SO on point.

As a musician who has a very identical approach what hits me most is that she is able to produce such feeling in front of a pretty much dead audience. I have always waited for a sort of dialogue. I lay out my feelings and someone will nod and reassure me. She doesn't wait for the audience to agree with her. She just shouts her feelings, knowing that if they are sincere they will reach those who are eager to listen. thank you.

when she starts to mix music, she went to her own world
  • @thetinytales
So much bravery here. She bared her soul to us in such a genuine and musical way. Wow.
  • @MilesEllis
when she said "but its the price i'm willing to pay for this feeling as close to the source", dude like wow, she's talking about where we come from as a human being, being light and energy. dang she knows

She can see and feel music literally . I can tell. Some of the audience may see it as just “music”. But this is an extension of life and expression that only certain people have the gift of understanding. It’s like a 6th sense. I wish I was there live. And I love how she incorporates the metronome at certain parts, because it’s not only just to keep tempo. She’s using it as an instrument.

She lives on another dimension and I love it. An ethereal explorer ✨

"These are like my pet wolves, in that it's technology and technology is fickle. And they often sabotage me, but it's the price I'm willing to pay for this feeling as close to the source, as electronically, technologically, humanly possible right now. For as little as possible to be lost in the conversion, for the essence of who we are, to not be lost in translation" - Claudio. I love this quote so much. Respect.

as an artist, we are trying to express the human experience.... she perfectly articulated the artist experience

As a musician and producer, this is pretty much the closest anyone has ever gotten to describing how I feel when I create. It makes me want to get up and record something right now. Thank you, Claudio! You're such an inspiration 🙏

YT is filled with musical artists that have been doing this sort of thing live for over a decade. Making music in one's humble home studio and then sharing it with the world is an honor, even when the world couldn't care less. Many great YT musicians don't get the honor and respect that they deserve. Almost all do it for free out of love for their craft. The competition for viewers is astoundingly immense, and great music will go unheard too. So, if you do come across some music that you think is good, give them a thumbs up rather than just moving on to another channel. It helps the musician and it shows respect for something that is given to you free of charge.
  • I literally cried hearing this woman speak. The imagery she invokes with her attempt to put sound and music into a language that we can talk about is nothing short of amazing.
