The title is misleading , people still say “ how much is this “ all the time… I actually have never heard of people say “ what’s the damage like “ and I’ve been living in US for over 10 years. When asking for price, it’s common to say” excuse me, do you mind checking the price of this item for me ?” Or simply “ excuse me, how much is this ( and point to the item )”.

所以不是能不能用how much，而是能不能只说“how much”。正如那些native speaker说的，需要加softeners，比如exercise me之类的，或者说how much do I owe you。所以关键不是how much，而是一种亲切的对话的感觉。比如问，exercise me, how much is this, please? 这就没啥问题。

不久前才发现Maggie的视频，感觉做的很好，现实有用👍，每天看几个学习😊 这个视频要是早一天刷到就好了，昨天才发了个email，直接问对方 how much for ... service 😂😂

"How much" is quiet commonly used expression for asking prices in most shopping locations even in the garage sale. Also you can heard that in a lot movies and TV shows. I don't feel anything wrong to use that. Surly ,there's nothing wrong to show yourself as more civilized! The native speakers don't say "how much"? That is just a joke!
