P Chidambaram on what he would do if he was Jaitley | Devender Sharma on solving farmer crisis

Published 2017-06-21
P Chidambaram and Devinder Sharma talk about the Indian economy under the NDA government and the current state of the country’s agricultural sector with Shoma Chaudhury at Algebra, The Arts & Ideas Club, Gurgaon on 26 November 2016.

Former union finance minister, Mr.P Chidambaram, talks about demonetisation, its effects on the Indian economy and whether it was worth it. He explains that income that ought to taxed has escaped taxation. He says that in order to end the shadow economy, all income should be taxed; and, the devised taxation machinery should be effective.

Devinder Sharma, a renowned agricultural economist, argues about how the government’s policies devised to allegedly generate employment are skewed policies. He says the government understands employment generation as pushing people from the rural to the urban areas; as a consequence of which, most people work as daily wage labourers. Furthermore, he proposes that if the government would actually concentrate on improving the agricultural sector and increases the MSP, it would boost the country’s GDP while simultaneously solving the issue of growing farmer crisis and their suicide.

Algebra takes the idea of a club – a universe of the likeminded – and expands it to new paradigms. The key idea behind Algebra is to bring together a fellowship of people who believe great cities are built not just on infrastructure but a life of the mind; who understand robust and liberal societies need the oxygen of great conversation and nuanced thinking. At a time when we are increasingly surrounded by rage and noise, Algebra is that unique live and continuous space where people could go for a genuine exchange of ideas and exposure to issues; where new seeds could be sparked, fresh perspectives formed, and intelligent connections made.

Algebra – the Arts and Ideas Club is designed to host over 60 conversations over the year with topline thinkers and practitioners from almost every discipline that impacts human affairs: politics, economy, environment, spirituality, cinema, medicine, science, technology, music, media, literature, the arts, sports, people’s movements, et al. In a line, Algebra is a space where one can meet an exciting, cutting-edge spectrum of people shaping the world in different ways. Where one can test one’s ideas, challenge one’s perspectives, and build friendships. A sort of fellowship of the curious and engaged.

How intelligent is he. Some feels proud to listen his every points. Well thought and put forward.
  • It is surprising> Mr Devender sharma, you have really enlightened us with the real problems of the farmers and its solutions. If the schemes of subsidy in huge volumes as in foreign countries to farmers, then perhaps that wont reach the actual farmers, but the politicians and their spouses, who actually show farm production on records and get away with subsidies. there should be some other novel way, where actual farmer community should flourish and prosper, which in turn drives the growth of other sectors of economy and push the GDP to double digit as well. You deserve to be in Govt. as an advisor in Agricultural ministry

The problem started with congress govt allowing corruption by its allies with no checks on them and than people voted BJP without realising BJP has no able individuals to run a country. Now Modi self servingly made this foolish decision to fulfil his rhetoric without realising how blunderess the decision would be cos he has all spineless psycophants around him who wouldn't dare to question his foolish ideas.

I cannot really say if Chidambaram is corrupt or not or if his son is corrupt or not. If they are then the judicial needs to take charge. However will say this that this man has a far better understanding of the economics and finance as compared to Jaitley and NDA Government leaders. Demonetisation has devastated a well running economy. One would then think that the government learnt the lesson as far as the implementation part is concerned but no. They repeated the same mistake with how they introduced GST. Lack of clarity and ridiculous taxation slabs with little help available. And what is the deal with 49 returns in a year. How does one expect small businesses to comply. Poor governance.

Normally the moderator is unbiased but I notice mostly all your speakers as well as you Ms.Shoma vehemently disgrace current government
  • Anchor is hell bent in proving that BJP is corrupt... Shame on her...
  • @AbilashS
he gave the percentage of shadow economy for both China and US and missed the percentage for India because the percentage is over 40%! He is one of the architects of that and he doesn't accept it. This is available at 6:00

How does it matter whether make in India is for India or for the world?

One more request to the Programme Convener of Algebra; the slides which you are displaying behind the speech; few of them are not relevant to the discussion. Say for example when there was a discussion went on pertinent to the Agri Sector along with Sharma Ji, there was a slide depicting demonetization and the comment of some experts. Display a slide which is relevant to the discussion or topic of the discussion will be more suitable.

A jail sentence would bring out truths about some undesirable politicians like the person Ex minister Chidambaram.
  • @Tubingonline1
She starts asking an important question and then she says I won't get into it right now! Why do you even raise the question when you are not interested to persue It? But apart from this this is a great forum I am a big fan of Shoma and Algebra. Great platform good constructive and balanced discussions. Thanks a lot.
  • Mr P. Chidambaram just grilled the opposition on a barbecue whereas Mr Devendra rightly broke the agony and plight of the backbones of the country.
