Teddy Long and Bill Apter are both fans of Swerve Strickland, who defeated Samoa Joe at AEW Dynasty to become the face of the company. So much so, that they feel that bringing color into the equation undermines his achievement as a professional wrestler. Join this animated conversation with host Mac Davis as he puts the extraordinary contest between Will Ospreay and Bryan Danielson over as well.
Do you think Swerve is a better Champion than Samoa Joe was?

I'm with Teddy... he's a man, he's a pro, he's a champ. Race doesn't even need to enter the equation. Swerve is an individual. How many AEW champs have there been, 6 or 7....? If there was 30 or 50 years and never a black guy as champ, then i could see making a headline about it, but in a company like AEW, that bend over backwards to talk about how "progressive" it is.... the fact should just speak for itself.
  • Was OK for Ron Simmons. At this point it's ridiculous to keep pointing it out. Especially in a company where there have only been like 6 world champions ever lmao.

Teddy is right. Most black people don't want to be called African American, because they were born here. They are American. Yes, stripped of any history and any way to track their heritage. All that aside, anyone born here is one of us, regardless of color. So when Teddy said he was their first black champion, he was right.
  • Why mention that he’s the first ever “black” world champion it’s like their making it out that being black is a disability and makes it even more special that they won the belt
  • Let me ask the question…. When Samoa Joe won the world title did AEW stress “The first ever Samoan AEW “ Champion??? Nope
  • @nethdogg
Sorry Mac , it’s you and The Undertaker one on one playa

I do remember Swerve posting on X about being AEW first black champion.
  • @JUSLOFI
AEW doesn't have a legacy of racism to stress Swerve being the first black AEW anything. AEW is a baby promotion, EVERYBODY IS THE FIRST in that company.
  • @J12_99
That’s literally swerves gimmick, all he did was say he wanted to be the first black champ and Tony gave it to him

This topic perfectly represents the argument that social justice warriors would focus on being a minority first instead of a talent. We keep race issues alive with that thought process. Swerve himself even said it was important for him to become the first black AEW Champion. But it's not helpful to any race or Americans or people in general to focus on skin color. We need to focus on the character and the talent of people. Yes your background can have influence on who you are but it's not all you are. Good on Bill and Teddy for understanding how we move forward in life

They definitely point out "Trick Williams" as that "Black" NXT Champion or "Ricochet" as that "Black" Speed Champion or Moose as that "Black" TNA World" Champion. But news/podcast media only points out AEW. :)

I agree with TEDDY. The man is the CHAMPION! The fans love him.
