On December 9, 2001, novelist and Vietnam War veteran Michael Peterson called 911 to report that his wife Kathleen Peterson had suffered an accident. The 48-year-old was lying at the bottom of a staircase in a pool of blood at the couple's Durham, North Carolina, home. Police suspected that this was not an accident and arrested Michael Peterson and charged him.

As the Petersons were gearing up for the trial, French filmmaker Jean-Xavier de Lestrade came to them wanting to make a documentary about the case. He was granted a truly jaw-dropping amount of access, as he filmed the entire trial from inside the courtroom and was a fly on the wall in the Peterson household and with the defense team throughout the entire thing. Where does the staircase owl theory fit into any of the staircase movie?

All the female panelists have agreed we are never getting involved with anyone by the last name of Peterson. Hands down.

Chase trying not to laugh at ‘help, help’ 😂😂😂😂😂

The Netflix series had me fooled. Throughout the series, he and his lawyer talk about how there wasn't any blood found on the ceiling. But when the prosecutor pointed out how she was hit and blood spatters were found on the ceiling, his lawyer did not object. I couldn't figure out why they didn't object. Then I realized the documentary was filmed for just his side. He made it look like the police were out to get him.
  • I'm a retired court reporter of 30+ years. The profession makes someone, in a fashion, an expert in reading body language. These men are dead on. This is a great video. You have a new subscriber.
  • @911calimommy
I've been a 911 dispatcher for 14 years. The part that first popped out most to me as a red flag is when he said, "She is still breathing." Usually the caller says 'she's breathing' or 'she's not breathing.' Not "still breathing".
  • Am I the only one who wishes for more than one analysis per week? I find myself rewatching older analyses several times!

I was a friend of Kathleen's from her days in Maryland until our final phone call in 2000. Due to her personal history, she would not tolerate an extramarital affair. Kathleen told me that Michael was going to write a novel and memorialize her....she would not have expected it to roll out like it did. I miss my friend.
  • Everybody has a sweetly romantic night right before the suspicious accidental death of their spouse.
  • @Nehusker67
Just want to say hello to my fellow panelists. And thank you to Greg, Scott, Chase and Mark for continuing to come back every week.
  • @500midnightmary
He says, "She took up my whole life." That sounds more like a complaint instead a statement of affection. Usually that phrase is 'she is my life'.
  • @allysonbee855
She went upstairs, got on the computer, and discovered his gay life.
  • What stands out to me is here is a married man (widower) and he gets accused of homosexuality. He asks “where?”
  • Mark’s “mommy mommy mommy” has the exact intonations of a European police siren 🚨 rofl well played Mark, well played 🙌🏻

06:35 What also jumped out in the 911 call is how he’s not speaking to Kathleen. Even if unconscious most people would speak to the person, calling their name, trying to wake them up, begging, praying — basically having some sort of intimate personable moment to reassure or show concern, even if they were seemingly dead. He is not doing that.
  • @LIVINHAMEE
This call is the most important piece of evidence in the investigation, as he says he found her, but in the call, he talks as if he was sure she had fallen down the stairs, he doesn't say she is bleeding or that he doesn't know exactly what happened. For someone who was in the pool and didn't witness the fall, it's pretty strange.
  • @CL-ns6sy
He supposedly spent hours outside in 50 degrees in shorts and a t shirt, nope, they didn't go to the pool. Bless Mark and his interior design assessment. "Lack of upholstery" big red flag there!
  • @mjones9167
I love when Chase said "In most crimes, probably 90%, I made that up but lets just go with it". 😅😅😅 Chase you could make anything up and I'd go with it. Also love Mark's nod to The Princess Bride.
  • @deaconsyxx322
How can watching 4 webcams of blokes talking be so interesting? Love this channel 👍🏻
  • I also noticed how he never mentioned blood in the 911 call. And if she stopped breathing, why not give CPR? He says "she's still breathing" as if he expected her to not be. It all sounds scripted until the dispatcher starts asking more questions. Its the hanging up several times while she asks questions that gets me.
