The cyberpunk genre is perhaps now more popular and relevant than ever, and the same can be said for actor Keanu Reeves. Together they would prove to be a powerful pairing with the sci-fi masterpiece THE MATRIX and the recent hit videogame CYBERPUNK 2077. However, that was not the case in 1995, when JOHNNY MNEMONIC was released to confounded and indifferent audiences. How did the combined efforts of a newly minted A-list star, a noted visionary artist, and a pioneer in cyberpunk fiction result in a target of ridicule and a box office disappointment?

  • Johnny Nemonic, Hackers, Dark City, The 13th Floor and Strange Days were my favorite movies in the 90s.

Spider's rant about how computers are poisoning us yet we can't live without them was my favorite part. The movie is a guilty pleasure of mine.

Man I loved this flick when it came out. I was a big Shadowrun fan in the 90s so this cyberpunk gem was just what I needed at the time. To this day it's still so underappreciated, and kicked off Keanus habit of portraying black suit and tie wearing scifi icons. As an added bonus, this movie taught me how to spell Mnemonic (autospell still had to help out) šŸ˜‚ I would love to see the original envisioned version in its entirety though.

Tale as old as timeā€¦every time a great concept becomes a mess of a movie you can practically guarantee you will here the phrase ā€œstudio interferenceā€. You would think the execs would eventually learn that lesson but I fear most of their egos are too expanded to leave room to learn anything!

It was way ahead of its time. Another film that came out the same year as another cyberpunk action movie that is still an underrated gem is Strange Days, which James Cameron produced and his ex, Kathryn Bigelow, directed the movie.
  • I was a PA on this at the beginning of my career, 19 and fresh out of a film program. Met Keanu on that set, he was a really nice guy. Once in a shuttle to set he said ā€œMan, I donā€™t get half of what Iā€™m saying here, Iā€™m a bonehead, this is too cerebral for meā€ Also, the DP underexposed the whole last battle sequence in Heaven. Meaning in post it had to be push processed, giving it a grainy flat look.

I lament that we will never get to see the proper Director's Cut but i will now have to get the B&W BR. Johnny Mnemonic and Strange Days are the two best cyberpunk movies that made The Matrix even better. JM also cemented Reeve's love for the cyberpunk genre and cemented that he would also be forever a Johnny. Thank you for this video.

This film felt like a prelude for the Matrix. I actually enjoy this film.
  • Johnny Mnemonic could be a really good 8 episode series on a streaming service.
  • I also really enjoyed this movie. Still do. Perfectly captures the craziness of the mid-late 90's. How can you beat Keanu, Ice, AND Rollins?!
  • @Aragorn7884
The real question is: where's my GD room service?!? šŸ˜
  • @DroosterH
I consider this Keanu's second best cyberpunk role after Johnny Silverhand. There's so much to like about this movie that it outweighs the shortcomings.

I first watched this flick as a kid in 1998. I fell in love with it then. I still love it now. Despite its flaws.
  • This was the first Reeve's film i ever saw when i was a kid and it's still one of my faves.
  • @phyrr2
I remember when this movie first came out, those of us who played Cyberpunk 2020 were thrilled to see what seemed like actual class representations in a movie. The girl is obviously a Solo with her mods, Johnny a Netrunner...
  • I love this movie I never get sick of it I watch it every time it's on TV
  • @kswone1
Loved it and 95 when I was 15 loved it and 2005 when I was 25 and still think it holds up now at 42 no nostalgia glasses needed it's just an overall good film.
  • @RusPitman
I'd love an animated Neuromancer. I feel like now with Arcane, Spiderverse etc. there would be a real opportunity for it to be executed well without too much "studio interference".
  • @njt002
I remember winning two tickets to an advanced screening of this movie. I completely forgot about it after The Matrix came out.
  • Saw this in the theater as a teenager. I still listen to songs from the soundtrack. šŸ‘
