Rishi Sunak is to resign as Conservative Party leader after a catastrophic election defeat to Labour.

The outgoing UK prime minister announced his resignation outside 10 Downing Street in London.

Sunak said he will not resign immediately – only when formal arrangements for a successor have taken place.

Labour won the UK general election in a landslide, with the Conservatives seeing their worst result – in terms of seats – in the party's history.

I'm not british, but this is by far the most gracious farewell speech a world leader has to say facing defeat. Much respect.
  • Well at least he was honest. He didn’t BS or point fingers. It takes a lot for people that high up to admit to making a mistake.

I came here to hate, but that's hard to do when Rishi left such graciously and with humility.

This contrasts sharply w/ American 🇺🇸 politics! The outgoing guy actually APOLOGIZED to the people of the country & said, “I am sorry“!
  • A very humble and respectful speech. Something that is completely absent in the US

He wasn’t the worst. He was given the burden of BoJo and Liz Truss.
  • Wow.. this the best speech I heard from a prime minister before stepping down
  • Rishi Sunak tried but failed, he took the burden from Boris Johnson and Liz Truss which was already a collaspe. He didnt keep it at the level they had both left it he tried to bring it up but didnt go well. He called for general election as the country needed better. No need for people to be rude at all as you wouldnt know how it is to have the pressure of the country on your shoulders. Thank you Rishi Sunak.

And with that, all the problems this country faces now sit with Keir Starmer. For the sake of the nation, I hope he knows how to deal with them. 🇬🇧
  • As an American, I appreciated the dignity, grace and mature way PM Sunak addressed his nation for a final time. That was a fine example of a peaceful transfer of power. All the best to the UK as you enter a new era of Labour government. Keep calm, and carry an optimistic spirit!
  • Rishi Sunak wasn't the worst. His predecessors had left a bad struggling economy. Rishi gave a gracious farewell speech. 🇬🇧 🇮🇳 😔

this is a fine example of a true leader. One that shares the success and takes on the failure alone. The world needs more of such leader then only will be a better place.

Joe and Trump take notes, that's how you do a speech, with respect.

At least your PM had the humility to call an election. Good luck with Labour. Truly.

This is very heartfelt and dignified speech full of maturity and onus, given by a UK PM in a long time, if we were to recall the exit speeches made by Boris Johnson,Liz Truss,Theresa May! Rishi Sunak had walked in a mess left by LT & Bojo, fair enough he tried he failed but made a graceful exit by apologizing to people.Rare skill in politicians of today.

Rishi wasn't the worst, but he carried the failings of many many associates with him into this election. I don't think we have seen the last of him.

As you leave 10 Downing Street, I want to express my gratitude for your dedication and service to our country. Your leadership during these challenging times has been instrumental, and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Please know that I will extend all my support to you in the future as well. Thank you for your commitment to the nation.

Great heartwarming speech that I ever seen. I like Mr. Sunak. You didn’t fail. They failed you. That why the majority of the party took the fall as it should be. Enjoy your stress free life. You made history already.
