From the Salon Frédéric Chopin at Paris's Place Vendôme, Bruce Liu – winner of the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition – presents an intimate recital of the composer's music. The Ballades Nos. 2 and 3 form the heart of the programme, the one contrasting lilting lyricism with stormy outbursts, the other building from a quiet, understated opening to a triumphant conclusion. The ballades are bookended by two early works, the spritely Rondo à la mazur and the dazzlingly virtuosic Variations on "Là ci darem la mano". And Liu continues in virtuosic vein for two encores: Chopin's "Black Key" Etude in G-Flat and the breathtaking Etude "La Campanella" by Chopin's friend and rival Franz Liszt.

the way he finished, with sweat dripping down his face, oh god it was magical, his hands were so soft and sensual 10/10 perfomance

thank God. Finally a version of this piece that doesn’t give equal weight to both hands. The melody is in the right hand, the left-hand plays the compliment. That’s the way it supposed to be done. A lot of people play with equal weight and it just eff’s the whole thing up. This is beautifully played with the exact amount of touch necessary between the two hands.

I am assuming this was a very small, intimate group of listeners, judging by the smattering of polite applause at the end. I expected to hear men weeping and woman swooning. Never have l heard this piece played so magnificently. Every single note.
