Mother was creating a humanity that would care about each other, and not destroy one another. Mother got rid of outside humanity because of their destruction and disregard for others. What mother did with daughter is make her distrust mother and come back for her brother. Mother’s goal was to create a humanity that wouldn’t destroy each other but care for one another so much that they would risk their lives to keep each other safe

This movie was absolutely fantastic. That twist where you realize Mother let it all happen to show Daughter that the outside couldn’t be trusted was a brilliant twist.

and to make it all better, the robot didn't grow attached and all lovey dovey to make an easier ending. it acted just like how an AI would and I love that
  • If you don't understand the true meaning of this movie I'll explain. Absolutely everything in this movie was staged perfectly according to Mother's plans. Everything that daughter sees was planned out from the beginning to teach her a lesson to become the next mother. Mother's goal was to raise daughter to be a perfect mother for the embryos.
  • It makes sense that that woman lied about being raised in the mine, as she was born in the same facility. Really loved this concept, but i was actually on mother's side, she had a goal and that was creating humans that aren't violent and are smart

Mother said that all the droids share a single consciousness and that there was one final test. The entire interaction was the test, not what was on the tablet. Mother wrangled Woman to the place to interact with Daughter, help her "escape" to see the reality of the outside world and learn the truth of what had occurred and how other humans struggle to survive now. If she failed that portion, she'd become another Woman, staying outside to be hunted by Mother. If she passed that, she'd return. The jawbone in the incinerator was adult; Mother had nurtured at least one other child to maturity who failed some aspect of the test prior to leaving for the outside world, and was dispatched because of it. Dang. If she'd decided to continue with the test on the tablet instead of helping Woman, she would have failed. As far as we know, all the "outsiders" are Sons and Daughters who'd been raised and released, one by one. Wow. Just wow. Magnificent plot.

I love the design for Mother's character. The added heat emitters is a nice touch, since it's been shown that babies require warmth and care. In fact, they'll prioritize it over sustenance.

I kind of knew instantly that woman was a prior "daughter" as the movie said it started at day 1 and by day 13,867 the daughter was a teenager... 13,867 days is almost 38 years.... the math didn't add up, till they found the woman, then bam it all made sense.
  • @ifrit05
I actually never thought about the woman being a prior baby, mind blown.
  • @FUNKY_KETCHUP
The mother, is a freaking good caring mother, she only did this, just for humanity to be better. WHY
  • @watyhu99
I don't think the ending was implying that the woman was one of the embryos. It was implied that mother kept the woman alive as part of the plan to show daughter the negatives of humanity and that everything was calculated. Mother planned everything with the knowledge of the likelihood of daughter rebelling, and thus also had a contingency for re-correcting her path this way. I personally don't think that mother would have made mistakes such as leaving her damaged hand out despite having educated daughter about how she functions and operates. It's like everything was a highly elaborate plan based on the test responses received and calculations based on daughter's responses.
  • Honestly, this movie doesnt seem half bad. The scenario and writting seem pretty damn smart.
  • @francesco8000
This movie captures pretty well the idea that an extremely advanced AI would be waaaaaaaaaay smarter than a human so it would be more than capable to manipulate and predict our actions.
  • @pjshady7465
So, the initial baby was a failure who went on to live forty years outside when there were still humans around? Until all humans got killed except her, because she served a purpose for Mother's great plan, so she ended up returning to the place where she was born after all those years? Wow.
  • "Mother, why aren't there any other children?" "Idk," mother replied. "it would make way more sense to raise at least like 10-15 kids around the same age at the same time."

13,867 days in the bunker, and dad still hasn't come back with milk from the store

This is sort of a retelling of Gardener in the Dark : "For a gardener will pluck the weeds, not because he hates the weeds, but because he loves the flowers, and wants them to prosper without being strangled by the weeds."
  • @shydoorness
I cried a little bit during the part where mother was destroyed. This movie is amazing.

This movie is so good that even a monotone Text-to-Speech readout of the story is absolutely unblinkable
