〇東海道新幹線が降雪時徐行運転を必要とする理由
JR東海は徐行運転について「列車の走行により舞い上がった雪が車両床下に付着、塊となって線路に落下しバラスト(敷石)を跳ね上げることで車両床下の機器を破損させないよう速度を落として運転する場合があります。」としています。
そもそも1959年に着工した東海道新幹線は雪に対する対策が取られていませんでした。
東海道新幹線は盛り土区間が多く線路にはバラスト(敷石)が敷かれています。
開業後、降雪による車体への影響が想定以上であった為、その後様々な対策が取られるようになりました。
上越や東北新幹線などはその教訓が活かされ建設されています。
また東海道新幹線は東北や上越など豪雪地帯を抱える地域とは異なり降雪は少なく、東北や上越などのような本格的な雪対策をするにはコストパフォーマンスが悪い事も理由に挙げられます。
◯Reasons why the Tokaido Shinkansen requires slow-speed operation during snowfall
JR Central explains that slow-speed operation may be necessitated due to "the snow that is kicked up by the movement of the train, adhering to the underside of the vehicle, and forming lumps. These lumps can then fall onto the tracks, causing the stones to be dislodged and potentially damaging the equipment under the train floor."
Initially, when construction began in 1959, the Tokaido Shinkansen did not have measures in place to deal with snow. The line consists of many embankment sections with stones laid on the tracks. After its opening, the impact of snowfall on the train bodies exceeded expectations, leading to the implementation of various countermeasures. Lessons learned from this were applied to the construction of other lines such as the Joetsu and Tohoku Shinkansen. Furthermore, unlike regions with heavy snowfall like Tohoku and Joetsu, the Tokaido Shinkansen experiences less snow, making full-fledged snow measures, like those implemented in Tohoku and Joetsu, economically inefficient.

Todays video was interesting got to see Shinkansen high speed bullet trains in snow i.e., heavy snowfall and sprinkling of the water helps to melt the snow as well as gives the Tokaido Shinkansens a very good bath😊 during their temporary slow journey i.e., passing through stations in a caution ⚠ speed😊 but its good for safety during snowfall. The outdoor snow shots are awesome! I assume that they're not going anywhere close to full speed through a station but the swirling snow makes it look so fast. Looking forward to riding one of these.

東北は粉雪で車体に雪が付かないなどの理由で、基本減速なく走る東北新幹線が大好きです😄 雪と新幹線がこんなに合うとは知りませんでした。 芭蕉が生きていたら何句でも詠めてしまいそう。

Astounding & beautiful. I can keep watching it again and again and again, really. We've snow like this in Canada but can't dream of trains like this here, not in our lifetime ! At 16.35 in Urasa, what's the function of water spray, unless its to de-freeze or a train wash. Thank you for being there in cold, for us ~ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
