When Mt. Gox collapsed in the early months of 2014, it marked one of the largest financial heists in history – yet no one knew who was responsible for the hack. With billions of dollars missing and thousands of angry creditors demanding justice, the pressure was on to find the criminals behind it. In this mini-documentary, I tell the story of Mt. Gox. From its troubled beginnings to the masterminds behind its downfall.

A big thank you to Peter McCormack and his show What Bitcoin Did for letting me use his interviews with Jed McCaleb and Mark Karpelès in this video.

From Runescape videos to incredibly well edited and thorough crime analysis, and in a niche of your own. Another banger, keep it up

Been rewatching your other docs like these. I don't know what it is you're doing Crumb, but your way of doing these videos and the subjects themselves is like no other I ever watched. I LOVE watching them, thank you for your work!
  • @reprovedcandy
As a developer, I've got to say that I'm ASTONISHED they left such a huge vulnerability in their code where you could just change the value of the request (that's very easy to do btw - if you leave a vulnerability that blatant).

Aliaksandr Klimenka (one of the other two guys) was arrested in Latvia on December 21, 2023 and made an appearance in a San Francisco federal court on February 2nd, 2024, the department said. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted on all counts of money laundering conspiracy and operation of an unlicensed money services business.

It's been so cool watching you transition from a simple OSRS channel to doing these incredible deep dives into all sorts of different subjects. You're truly a credit to our community, Crumb.

As someone in the cybersecurity community, love stories like this where theres a lot of research into them.
  • @fadedgeff
mark is a really good dude for beating that 99.8% conviction rate and reimbursing people all their coins instead of taking a profit

I still don't believe I will ever see my mt gox funds. The roller coaster of emotions I've had over the years over 1.6 btc I lost is a enough for a lifetime I'm completely over it. I probably would of sold it at under $2000 anyways lol

Relevant context on Japan's legendary conviction rate. 1. That figure refers to trials, and includes guilty pleas, which must still be taken to trial, and 2. more than anything it reflects the discretion of prosecutors to not try weak cases. Comparing like to like, the US federal conviction rate for cases where charges are brought to their conclusion is over 99.5%.

I have never been remotely interested in cybercrime but following your recent videos has me intrigued! You do so well to explain a difficult to comprehend concept so concisely and interestingly. The level of detail is perfect and your voice is very soothing to listen to. Keep up the good work!

I've been watching you for years but never subbed until now. Your detailed breakdown of the technicals and the situation as a whole were very clear and concise. I'll be keeping an eye out for all futute content, keep up the amazing work Crumb!
  • @entoo9677
how inhumane keeping a man locked up on no charges
  • @ak-jx1pm
It's crazy to think some of the BTC I used to buy my drugs with could have been part of a massive hack
  • Loving this new docuseries version of crumb. And truely loving the whole hacking and cyber crime theme actually really refreshing compared to the RuneScape context we’re used to from you
  • @skateruwu
Switching from osrs content to real crime video essays was such a good move. Keep it up, you are great at this!
