Great Wall - Steed 2019: Dual Cab Value for money; Nothing less – Nothing more

Published 2020-01-14
The Great Wall Steed: A value-for-money ute.

The Steed gives you a lot of exterior vehicle for an incredibly low price. The top of the range for the Great Wall is a dual cab ute, a large vehicle, yet its list price is about the same as a medium spec Toyota Corolla. In fact, probably a little cheaper.

It is clearly been built from a low price perspective so its performance and features are not going to be class-leading. Of course, it is very easy for a motoring journalist to say, well obviously you should spend 10, 20 thousand dollars more and buy a Nissan Navara, Holden Colorado or any of the others or perhaps go the whole hog and get the top of the range, four-wheel drive all the bells and whistles - Ford Ranger. It's just that that will cost you nearly three times the list price of this car.

So, what do you get for your dollar with a Great Wall Steed? Let's have a look.

I like your old school approach. Highlighting that turbo lag was well done. Too many modern road testers gloss over these fundamental driving flaws but you nailed it. The biggest problem with these cars is their lack of pride of ownership or "tradie cred." I've seen more than a few of these Chinese utes with all of the badgework removed. People say they have poor resale but you'll lose just as much if not more on a Toyota or a Ford. I'd love to see you test the new Ssangyong Musso XLV which is supposed to be a pretty good thing.
  • Great review, very informative.. thanks mate keep up the work 👏🏽👍

Great and honest review. Japan took 40 years to win trust of car consumers. Korean cars still not there yet. It takes time to win consumers. More choices are win for consumers and loss for corporations.
  • to remove the low down rev problem fit an i-drive....fixes it up nice and makes the whole drive better....

Fair review but you did leave out many of the other standard features like :: auto lights, auto wipers, auto dimming mirror, fold in door mirrors, heated front seats, tyre pressure monitoring and more. We own a Steed and an older V240 the diesel Steed returns 8.4 Lt/km on quite short runs it was a bit tight when new now run in its will pick up and go quite well. Im a motor mechanic I drive many different types and makes of vehicles and these two vehicle we own are as good and in some ways better, given the amount of cash you hand over for them. Leave out the race thoughts and you will save lots of money because in the end they all end up on a heap in the wreckers yard :). They are worth a thought and will do a lot of work for you!
  • Really, Really good review. Keep UP wth the good job. Those engines have timing belts, not chains. And I hate them. Unfortunately we do not know how the ute stands after 50000 or 70000 km of normal use in a farm or a construcción site. That would be nice to know. Cheers.

How's the Ute holding up now mate? Any rust or issues with engine since the review?
  • @bazzamow7031
Though you were a bit harsh, for the money it's a hell of a lot of ute, motor is Mitsubishi, the gearbox is from Australia, the body designed by BMW engineer, built using BMW robotics, and more specs than most, the petrol model is a lot better
  • Had one as our work ute at the airport. Biggest bucket of junk I've ever driven...glad they are finally getting rid of it.
