This is a video all about The Aurora Wager, a small indie game developed by a team of 3 for the 7 day Roguelike gamejam in 2013. It is incredibly unique and helped expand my knowledge of what a video game could be. I got to interview the creator, Martijn Zandvliet, and talk all about the creation of the game, its development, and its legacy.

Thanks for covering the game! It was a lot of fun revisiting the development process, as well as chatting about all the other projects that happened since then. Hey, if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask!

I love this topic-based sit down and chat style video! Legit I watch them right when they come out! Super impressed with your insights and can't wait for the next one! Also, SO COOL that you got to sit down and chat with a dev! That's such a neat experience!

I have heard of this game before from other YouTubers but never played it. I love any kind of open world game. Thanks for the video!

Oh man Game Jam. Haven’t heard that in years! There was a small horror game that got some traction (I think it was made during game jam or some other similar event) called something like Home Sick? It was a cool little horror game that this made me remember even existed after not thinking about it for like 5 years

Excellent touch playing the soundtrack in the background! Your video essays always gives me the highly satisfying good vibes after they end! I think I’ll make a playthrough myself! Haha
  • @orpal
I think you do really great video essays! Can't wait for more

This game is so obscure and should be so forgettable but I still randomly think about it. Glad to see other people see the magic it captures!

Wow. When I was searching this up, I had hoped to see a recent video about it, but never actually expected to see one! I found this game through NerdCubed, and still sometimes rewatch his videos on the game. In fact, I've still got the original file I downloaded on 4/11/2013, just a few months after his video came out. I remember playing the coop mode a lot with my little sister. Even now, she sometimes comes up and asks to play 'the hot air balloon game' with me. A fun thing we'd often do in the game is have one person man the balloon, having it go down, while another jumps out. When you move fast enough horizontally in this game, you sort of 'glide', and if the balloon is moving down, you have a decent way to catch back up to it, which is a nice way to pass the time and practice while waiting for the right air currents to take you to an island. I did find the hook thing to be pretty glitchy, or at least unintuitive. I don't remember exactly what the problem was anymore, but I think you could get stuck in hookshot mode, and maybe take it off or put other stuff on and break it? I do hope to see development continue/restart at some point. Having this game available on Steam, with actual online features, would be brilliant.
  • The nostalgia!! Played this a lot after seing Nerd3 play it back in the day many a year ago. Such an interesting game and an interesting feeling of isolation. Strong game in an interesting way.

dude great vid, my first major gaming experience was with the kinect star wars on the xbox, before that i had only played 2d games on my 3ds

Hilarious how I can't find games much similar to this. I really love this kind of game. Really tactile, little to no "ethereal HUD" juggling.
  • @gmtyph00n20
God I'm so glad someone else loved this game!!!
  • @flyingchimp12
I really do think if they put a proper amount of time in this game it could be a commercial success. Something like Sea of Thieves. A calmer game that you hop on and just explore with your friends or alone.

Damn never thought I’d see another video on this game I liked so much, although I never played it because I didn’t have the means to. But anyways, this game is very nostalgic.
