The Top 10 Movies of 2023 | A CineFix Movie List

Published 2023-12-31
Happy New Year! 2023 is in the books and we’re sneaking our best of the year thoughts just under the wire! It was a wild year for the movie business and who knows how much we’ll actually get next year because of it. In the meantime though, there was plenty to celebrate about 2023 in cinemas. From kaiju action epics on a budget, to both halves of Barbenheimer, indies that aren’t really indies and directorial debuts that blew us away, here are our picks for the 10 best movies of 2023.

While action franchises like Mission: Impossible and John Wick delivered exponentially more of what they’re known for, others went back to their roots. Horror films gave us more Evil Dead and a terrifying movie dressed up as a comedy from Ari Aster. Both Barbie and Oppenheimer surged in the box office but they might not have even been the best movie that came out that day. Meanwhile we got more Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Ridley Scott and Hayao Miyazaki which is never a bad thing! All that to say, 2023 was pretty great!

The Picks:

10 - Action Blockbuster - Godzilla Minus One - dir. Takashi Yamazaki
9 - Documentary - Beyond Utopia - dir. Madeleine Gavin
8 - Animation - The Boy and The Heron - dir. Hayao Miyazaki
7 - Horror - Talk to Me - dir. Michael and Danny Philippou
6 - Thriller - Killers of the Flower Moon - dir. Martin Scorsese
5 - Sci Fi Fantasy - They Cloned Tyrone - dir. Juel Taylor
4 - Comedy - Poor Things - dir. Yorgos Lanthimos
3 - Indie Drama - Asteroid City - dir. Wes Anderson
2 - Foreign - The Taste of Things - dir. Tranh Anh Hung
1 - Prestige Drama - The Zone of Interest - dir. Jonathan Glazer

This movie list was written and edited by Billy Jackson.

Below is a list of all the movies mentioned, but I've focused only on the movies that they mentioned by name, not the ones they showed a brief clip of without mentioning it, e.g. Napoleon at the start. Godzilla Minus One is an unexpected masterpiece. I never thought a Godzilla movie could make me cry and leave me broken hearted but there it is.
  • @nessleepk
Audio so much better! Nice quick reupload, and a pretty solid list. I got Monster as best movie of the year but I’m heavily biased on the Kore eda/Sakamoto masterpiece

I wanna add to the chorus and say that i also really miss the titles of the movies at the bottom of the screen. The great thing about these top 10 of movies of the year was always the amount of movies that are shown/mentioned and having the titles on screen helped to look for them.

THANK YOU for re-uploading! The soundtrack is awesome, but Clint Gage’s voice is awesome-r. Have a great new year, CineFix! My favorite channel on YouTube
  • @LeeannG
Clint gage’s narration is one of the most dependable parts of every year’s end. ❤
  • @alexpcook
It's wonderful when these lists happen to both agree with some of your own choices (The Zone of Interest, Asteroid City, Poor Things in my case) as well as throw a curve ball and introduce you to something new (They Cloned Tyrone). Looking forward to checking out some of these other suggestions.
  • @upshotMusicTV
“They Cloned Tyrone” ABSOLUTELY deserves to be on this list! Can’t believe how under the radar this film went! It’s a masterpiece from start to finish and holds amazing rewatchability!
  • @alfpumper
Great as always, many films I didn't know about until today which definitely are a must watch now. But a comment on your edition, it is nice you try to add the title card of the movie (in its own font) entering the list, but I really like the old method, the ribbon where you put the name, year and director. Same goes to the little 'subtitle like' info about the movies you mention that didn't get on the final list, as a non native english speaker it was really helpful to know the names of those, and since they are not mention on the description it is more difficult to get a grasp on them. Please think about yourselves as a global chanel, as you were before IGN.

Thank you so much for the quick audio fix! Appreciate any channel that listens to feedback so well. Great list!
  • @tobytomic4484
How do you keep making me fall back in love with cinema again?
  • @peoplevrobot
Saw “Anatomy of a fall” yesterday. Wasn’t expecting to like it but was blown away.. it really is a Masterpiece. The plot, the pacing, how they foster doubt as to the truth behind the accident, the depth of the characters, some surprising quirks in the cinematography, the performances. When it ends you are intrigued and disturbed yet in awe of it. For once a Palme d”Or has real substance. Its a Great film that is a great story with good tension. Best film in a long time.. Cinefix you should watch it again because it deserves a lot more than the mention you gave it.
  • @Gorgoj
That detail of the burning house from "The Mirror" when narrator said they hate to repeat themselves was pure gold. 19:30
  • @timpage9424
I feel like a pretty big movie guy then Cinefix drops a list and I realize I ain't even scratched the surface of 2023. 😭
  • Y'all really are the best! They Cloned Tyrone just shot to the top of my list. I also appreciate the Suzume shout out. That's my favorite film of the year so far.
  • @DaYoda191
I really haven't been keeping up this year, but so far The Iron Claw was the movie i enjoyed the most this year. A bit sad to not see it get a shout out from you guys.
