Icelandic horses out in falling snow 02/04/2011

Icelandic horses have a double layered winter coat giving excellent insulation. They were quite happy and preferred being outside in sleet and snow instead of under the available shelter.

Bangsi and Twistur have a partial clipped hair coat in this video, as was too warm for them in their thick coats on prior warmer days. Was mid-70Fs a week prior to dropping to wind chill of -5F. Warm days up to 82F on 12/21/2011 had them sweating. They were much more comfortable after clipping for the warmer days, but still fine in sleeting rain and snow with 45mph wind gusts on cold days.

Clipped when still damp from washing on warm winter day - belly, chest, part neck / part sides up to a point where below a line where got wet if rained. Also thinned Bangsi on his back some very unevenly. Used a 1/4" comb with #10 blade and left hair over 1/4 - 1/2 inch long. (if go with hair then doubles clip length). See videos of hair prior to clipping.

Videos showing their winter coats before clipped them around Winter Solstice 2011.

@TheSpiritProject Thanks. Camera is a Sony Hybrid Mega Pixel Handycam 40X DCR-SR45 that has a night vision feature. It has a bit of trouble focusing when in night vision mode. Used VideoStudio Pro X2 with no filtering.

@TheSpiritProject Video from last spring showing shedding in mid-March using Furbuster. Did not clip them last winter. Bangsi: watch?v=73FDy3Ei8bg Twistur: watch?v=3eNh0u8V8sY Think they were more comfortable with the partial clip this winter because had some warm days into mid-70s with them sweating in their full winter coats just standing around. I clipped longer than #10 blade. Did 1/4 inch on chest & left 1/2 inch on sides, belly. Was a rough clip job.

@TheSpiritProject I have 2 other videos showing their winter coats before clipped them around Winter Solstice. Warm days had them sweating.
