I entered the Community Game Jam 2019. Here's what I came up with...

PLAY THE GAME: samwel.itch.io/wheres-bill

→ Twitter: twitter.com/SamHGames
→ Music by Trevor Lentz: soundcloud.com/trevor-d-lentz

I finally got around to participating in a game jam. One week. The theme: the game is a liar. Hmmmm. Yeah, instead of doing that, let's make an infinite platformer! I'm too lazy to make levels myself, so I employed a lil procedural generation to build the levels for me. The game surrounds a robot that can't find his friend Bill. Hop from platform to platform in an endless search for the elusive figure. WHERE'S BILL?

I had a lot of fun making this game; it feels good to get something "published" every once in a while. There are of course tons of bugs and issues with the game, like most levels being pretty boring. Oh well.

PLOT TWIST:the robot IS Bill, he lost his memory and everything he remembers is the name Bill, so he will search for him forever but never find him because he is searching for himself

To the untrained mind, this could be a metaphor for loneliness.

"The game is due tomorrow, and it doesn't seem close to finished." This is a sentence i can relate to
  • I actually do like how you've used the idea that the game is lying. It's so subtle but effective how the intro sets you up to think that there's an ending but there just never is

Sorta sad tbh A little robot wandering infinitely in search of a friend that doesn't exist to begin with. That music helps with a sad atmosphere as well.

The fact that he will never find his friend bill makes the game more depressing
  • @pokerang007
I love how you didn't randomly generate new seeds, so that people don't know the game is actually infinite.

Some dude: speed runs this game Everyone: wait that’s illegal

Speedrunners: I've been playing this game for 21 years. I'm starting to think that this game doesn't have an ending.

This gives off either “Its a simple game with deep meanings we will never know/understand” vibe or “it might be a simple game at first but i know this will become a horror game” vibe
  • He should’ve have named it “the shortest game ever”, and have it repeatedly say that it only has a few levels, and you can beat the entire thing in under an hour
  • Love the idea! The robot makes it seem like a dystopian city aesthetic may fit better than grassy hills, but that's just me. This is so cool!

Imagine if you added text every so often like: Bill? Where are you? I'll find you even if it takes all the time in the universe! Will I ever get to Bill? Does Bill even exist? I have no one else... Basically, make it sad or depressing so the player REALLY wants to find Bill to stop the suffering of this virtual robot.
  • I have way too much empathy for this random robot that can’t find his friend.
