Frankie was literally born to go to high school and get unnecessary hate online; that's pretty tragic.

Spectra’s backstory is also pretty sad, but mysterious. The fact that she’s lied about her backstory so much that even SHE doesn’t remember who she was when she was a human is kinda heartbreaking. And then there’s also Robecca, who probably had the most intricate backstory that’s actually shown in the movies and not just in bonus content.
  • If I remember correctly in one of the Monster High Chapter Books about cleo, it says that her mother was supposed to go to the Safe House as well but she got lost or something for a few thousand years and returned one day

g3 seems to go back and forth on how the undead work. I think it's just whatever fits the story at the moment. g1 had some wild backstories. Count Fabulous did NOT have to have that backstory and yet...
  • real quick about g3 canon If i remember correctly yes, all monsters in g3 are their own species and were never human (well aside from were-monsters i guess). The tweet also said why. In light of world events that have become increasingly in numbers since the 2010s, the team didn't want the characters to be dead (or undead) children. I can see why they made that change, I'd hate to see theories like "Frankie's limbs come from this horrible real life event from like 3 years ago".

All of this lore building was what I expected to show up in Once Bitten Twice Dead, and NOT whatever they gave us instead.

damn I never knew these backstories wth 😭 I would say it’s pretty dark for a kids brand, but I did learn about Pocahontas when I was in 4th grade so…. it also puts a lot of perspective into characters, like Cleo. her family is the only thing left of her time period and she spent several thousand years with them, so that’s probably a major reason why she’s so loyal to them.

great video! and you’re totally right about how the utter horror of human-to-monster transformation gets completely glossed over in these backstories. i read a lot of anne rice’s vampire chronicles books in high school, and there’s some true definitions of body horror in those pages - descriptions of what it’s like to experience your human body physically change into something else, of seeing everything you know and love decay over time. if mattel did intentionally remove that sort of backstory from gen3 characters, it’s easy to see why. i’m just a little more surprised those backstories went through in the first place for gen1 characters!
  • Draculaura also just has a traumatic life in general I feel not just beginning. At least before Monster High, she and Dracula had to flee Transylvania because of an angry mob trying to kill them, plus Valentine manipulating her via her heart (manipulating her love and emotions essentially)
  • For those who don't know. alot of G1 MH Characters were once humans where as the showrunner She Fontana confirmed in G3 the boos are born monsters.
  • Oh 100% Spectra, Robecca, and Draculara- All three are just absolutely heartbreaking to me

Johnny Spirit was trapped in the school for thousands of years. Robecca was left unconscious and shattered for a whole century and probably never knew her father. Principal Revenant did some awful things, but having chains following you around for eternity until you do something like writing 10,000 essays is really brutal. Garrote was trapped in the Parisian catacombs for a whole decade. All of these characters were technically "born" just to be commercials to sell hunks of plastic for exorbitant prices with their personalities and personal reasons for existence being secondary. But the most shocking story in Monster High that's not really a backstory :O : In the game "Ghoul Spirit", Clawdeen had to change her outfit because another ghoul was wearing the same thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I don't know how the storyline is in monster high but if it's anything like the greek myth ,then Medusa has the most tragic backstory in my opinion. but among the characters we know i think it's Draculaura as she has been through the tragic death of both her biological parents at a young age and probably has felt all alone for many years. i also feel bad for cleo especially that she has a troublesome family but i think she is strong-willed enough to decide her own life with Deuce who is always supportive and loving to her
  • This is such a fun video idea, love exploring the tragic backgrounds behind our beloved Monsters. Definitely would love more videos on other character backstories! 🙂 **Also I was thinking about your beef with Gigi and the "problematic" way she granted wishes. In the 13 Wishes Movie, Gigi warns Howleen that there was a dark side to the wishes and to be cautious with what she wished for. It made me think how much of those problematic wishes granted were influenced by Wisp in some way, as prior to Wisp's existence, in that flashback scene Gigi apparently made many finders of the lamp very happy with their wishes. It also made me think that Gigi is the vessel for granting wishes however, genie magic is often unpredictable in nature, as seen in a lot of media and stories. This leads to believe that Gigi was happy to grant finders their wishes with no ill intention, however, the possible influence of Wisp and the literal and unpredictable "problem-solving" nature of genie magic may have granted finders their wishes but not in the way that was positive. Sorry for the paragraph haha, just some theories I thought of and wanted to share with you 😅

If you like tragic romances you should dive into the fact that Headmistress Bloodgood and Hexiciah Steam (Robecca's father) had a romance 👀
  • Love this 😊 could you make another video with more backstories? Juat super fun ofc only if that inspires you ❤
  • @thatponighoul
In my opinion Robecca has the saddest backstory - she was like pretty heavily implied to be murdered, her balance module was then used as a trophy, and when she finally is reassembled she wakes up to a world that is nothing like the one she remembers and she's immediately given the news that her father is also gone. In her diary she literally has a line where she's says "It has been all I could do to daily resist the urge to let my life go to rust." 😭 She's going through it.
