Colin, Thank you for posting such a wonderful recording. This symphony is one of my favourite pieces ever since hearing Sir Adrian Bolt’s mono LP back in the ‘60s. This recording is one of the best electronic recordings imho. However to hear it live especially the energy of the first movement even from a local orchestra and local choir has to be experienced at least once. Thank you again - it brought tears to my eyes. Frank
  • Wonderful to see this back after missing it for a while. I just listened to "On the beach at night, alone" with your curated images. I love how you move from the nocturnal seascapes to the women and to the Hubble telescope images of the cosmos; they capture both the deep humanism and the pantheistic mysticism of both Whitman's poetry and RVW's setting.
  • So wonderful to have you back with new musical offerings. RVW with your superb pictorial montages. What joy!

  • Sir Adrian Boult and Bernard Haitink are my favourite recordings! Thanks Colin for your always inspired choice of artworks to illustrate these stunning performances... P.S. actually I tend to prefer the two soloists from the Sir Adrian Boult version...

Thanks Colin. In a related much later work by RVW he uses the same basis of the first movement first subject ("And on it's heaving breast") as the basis of the theme of these variations https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmAQiTGeuHI --the theme also directly related to that of the flugel horn in the second movement of the Ninth Symphony - thus the Variations constitute a bridge returning us cyclically from the NINTH back to the SEA SYMPHONY. Enjoy - especially the utterly remarkable Variation IX Adagio.
