Welcome back to Stick to Football, brought to you by SkyBet. On this week’s special guest episode we are delighted to be joined by American Football legend and Burnley co-owner JJ Watt.

Watt announced his involvement with Burnley in 2023 and reveals his special connection with the town and football club, relationship with manager Vincent Kompany and his aims for the future at Turf Moor.

Despite a struggling Premier League season following promotion from the Championship, the 6ft5 Wisconsin man reiterates his long-term ambitions and talks about the rise of American footballers investing in English football clubs.

Regarded as one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, a competition he and siblings Derek and TJ have made a lasting impact in, Watt offers a unique insight into the difference behind the scenes and structures between America’s and UK’s national sports.

The 3x Defensive Player of the Year, who spent the majority of his career at Houston Texans before retiring at Arizona Cardinals, was the first player to make multiple 20+ sacks in multiple NFL seasons speaks and he explains how he used to eat up to 7500 calories a day as well as telling us who he thinks which footballers could make it in the American sport.

Finally he talks about how his last NFL game coincided with his new-born son Koa’s first game and life after retirement which has seen him enter football club ownership.

  • This JJ Watt fella is absolute class. Having a character like that in football is always wonderful. Good luck to Burnley!

JJ is a real example of a true American, and someone a lot of us in the US look up to. Hard working, humble, overall class act. Media does what media does, but I couldn’t be happier having him represent the US on such a big level. Especially being on a show like Stick to Football with these legends.
  • Jill brings so much to the chat , she is very dry and witty but knows when to listen . Love her ❤️
  • @JacDes82
The last 2min is 'pure gold' Roy Keane's best bit ever!
  • Got no clue about American Football but this guy was an absolute gentleman. Very interesting.

So glad JJ came on here. Shows that some of us Americans do love the sport of English football and there is no reason to hate on one another from across the pond. My grandmother was English so I always loved the culture. I also understand why some people may hate on us, but they gotta understand the stuff you see on tv and movies is versions of American people turned up to a 100. A lot of us are actually humble people just trying to make the best of the situation we are in and be happy.
  • OK, favorite part - JJ throws Roy under the bus about his Haaland comment, and then just sits back and watched the chaos for five minutes!! It was like everyone had forgotten JJ was there at that point!! Loved all of it, but that was good.

This is amazing, I'm from Houston where JJ played and there's noone else I'd want to represent the country. Back in 2017 a hurricane hit Houston & flooded my families house with 6ft of water, JJ helped raise $30 million to help people relocate & rebuild their houses just cause he played for the NFL team. Love the pod & COYG
  • @dundon9999
“The bonus for your tackle” followed by Roy and Jamie’s reaction is priceless
  • JJ is great for Burnley. He always pops into the local pub "The Royal Dyche" to talk to the locals. The Royal Dyche used to be called the Princess Royal, or the "Prinny", but they changed it when Sean Dyche was manager and made the sign outside, Sean Dyche dressed as Henry the VIII. 😁
  • I'm and irish man living in USA...watching nfl last 20 years and premierleague since day 1 .. Worlds colliding...jj watt and roy keane two beasts from two worlds
  • @mpblolly
14 mins in and all I can say is, JJ Watt is such a great advert for American ownership. Best ambassador for America. I loved JJ on The League (US TV series). Just fantastic.
  • @rizzles1985
I've never heard of this individual before, but what an awesome and humble person he is. He came across so well, and I especially appreciated the way he respected other sportspeople. Well done, good man!
  • One of the best episodes. I’ve no idea about NFL and stupidly thought ‘oh this will be rubbish’ …never judge a book by its cover briliant episode and a great guest.
  • @gary321
"I hope he's gone" by Roy had me screaming. Superb show
  • Burnley lucky to have this bloke. Clearly made a real effort to embrace the culture an how we care about the game
  • @Vic2joel
Love this convo…as an American, it’s very beautiful thing that JJ is being accepted and respected.
