Shrinkflation: Are grocery products getting smaller?

The next time you're at the grocery store, you may want to pay extra attention to the package size and price of some of the products you regularly purchase.

buying groceries has become depressing on multiple levels
  • Back in the 80s, I would measure the rate of inflation by the cost of Doritos and other chips. I would always notice those things rising in price first before other items.
  • Some products should change the packaging. Ellios only has 4 pepperonis and the photo still has 6
  • I got a digiorno pizza for 7 dollars instead of 5 and it’s like 2/3 of the size I usually get
  • I found that sizes varied from store to store. One store would have servings for 8 people and another servings for 10. On Amazon, they would have servings for 16 for the same price. Only reason I noticed is when I came home and noticed the size differences. Not because of inflation but it's adjusted to the store selling the items. Some even sell brands meant for sell in Mexico being sold in the US.

It is not just grocery stores that are doing this. Fast food restaurants are going crazy in this regard. Subway sandwiches has come up with an interesting variation: They have made their bread thicker and denser, leaving less room for ingredients. So their sandwiches now actually have more bread (cheaper) and less meats and vegetables (more expensive), making their sandwiches appear the same size or even larger but costing less for them to make. Yet they charge the same or more for them now.

And the newspapers have also shrunk by 2 inches on one side and 1 /2 inches on the other, this happened sometime in the past 20 years. I have an old newspaper from 1998 and compared it to one of today, a BIG difference.

Why not just sell "smaller" packs alongside the "normal" sized products?

These companies seem to forget that we don't need to eat any of their junk food, so keep shrinking the chip bags and the candy bags. I will eat only fresh fruit and veggies and meats and buy them locally when I can. They think we are stupid or something. I am boiling mad that I have to buy my laundry detergent more often because the container is the size of a dish liquid bottle now. I can fix that too, I can make my own laundry detergent. Just up the frickin price and keep the containers the same size.

I don't know where you see the prices staying the same but sure not around here. Little bags of candy at end of store aisles used to sell for $1 and are now $3.99. Little Dehby snack cakes have fewer in a box...used to be $1 and now about $4. And lol yes they actually think we are too stupid to notice lol. You can't possibly really believe they are not skyrocketing prices as well lol
  • I notice there is a slight different like about 10% between the weight of 1.5 qt of Breyers ice cream and that of Great Value ice cream, Breyers weighing about 720 grams average and Great Value weighing about an average of 830 grams when both packages show 9 servings of ice cream at 88 grams per serving. Some of you can do some checking yourselves to verify what I have said.

Here we go with the annoying question headline...that's YOUR job as journalists to tell us. And BTW, the answer is YES!!

It's happening to everything. Gatorade is 28 ounces now, use to be 32. Tide and Gain laundry detergent are 92 ounces instead of 100 and the 50 ounce bottles are now 46 ounces. Everything is changing but that's what happens in life.....things change!!
  • Shrinkflation I'm also shrinking my size LOL literally I been starving myself in an attempt to not spend money because of shrinkflation now just because I eat once a day instead of the 3 meals a day I'm not sure if that's called starving or if I'm just following a weight loss diet just to not spend extra money on something that has been affected by shrinkflation cause I really don't want to spend money anymore
