Ishi's whole family was actually killed in a massacre. His mother told him to pretend to be dead and float down a river. His mother died from drowning and he survived. He was also forced to live in the Berkeley museum as an exhibit, not as a teacher. Like, they actually made him make a small hut for himself in the museum. He was advertised as the "last Indian". I grew up in the Oroville area and learning about Ishi in elementary school. He spent his last years as a living exhibit and to me that was kind of sad.
