In our society when rates of mental and physical illness are on the rise, despite advanced modern medicine, we must look within to ask where we are going wrong. Dr. Gabor Maté is back on The Know Thyself Podcast today, for a deep dive into his analysis of our toxic culture, and how we can heal by finding our true, authentic selves.
He explains how to transcend the hypnotic passivity that we have fallen into, and begin to take our health (mental and physical) into our own hands. He explains generational trauma, ignorance in the medical system, and how the coping mechanisms we develop as children lead to detrimental subconscious patterns. He also explains overcoming addiction, emotional awareness, and whether he believes there is a 'divine design' in all our wounding.

I could listen to this guy all day. What a God send. I wish I could find a therapist as compassionate, as wise and as knowledgable as him.

I'm a psychologist and I can relate to all that he says , both personally and professionally. He is a powerhouse of wisdom. So much clarity and such amazing information, imparted so clearly and simple. His humility shows when he says you don't have to buy my book if you don't want to. You can borrow it from a library. This is so contrasting to the tons of self help/ life coaches who arrogantly tell you to buy their books and make tall claims. This man is a gift to humanity. God bless him and his work. Thank you for making such interviews freely available on YouTube.

Western medicine is helpful if you don't want to die. Eastern medicine is helpful if you want to live. - Thanks for an excellent video!🙂💙👌🏼

He saved my life. I was misdiagnosed with panic disorder for two decades. I was taking three 2mg Klonopin a day. After reading "Scattered (Minds)," I was successfully diagnosed with ADD. I was prescribed Ritalin. Immediately, I stopped biting my nails, I went from there a day to .5mg a week. I became sociable and got four jobs plus a volunteer job. Miracle!

I can deeply sense Gabor's authenticity. I love his composure and the way he articulates his points, so simply and concisely. Also that he is a good listener who shares and takes turns as opposed to dominating the conversation and speaking over his host as so many celebrity leaders do. I will buy his book tomorrow.

I could listen to Dr Maté for ever. He says things that we all know deep down to be true and fundamental. He has thought things through in a deep manner, and searched in his own soul. He has suffered and paid deep attention to other human beings in distress. He explains human trauma so well. He speaks about a world that has come to the brink of self-destruction and no longer betters people's lives. Let's hope more like him speak out!

André is an excellent host, he allows these wonderful people to talk without interrupting them.
  • @StressRUs
We are addicted to the very stress hormones our toxic culture generates, so we seek out ever more stressful exposure to violence, rapid change, ever faster lifestyles, overconsumption, excitement, the newest tech, etc. That addiction to dopamine and endorphins keeps us numbed and seeking more stress with no conscience. Another wonderful interview! Stress R Us

I have Gabor's book, The Myth of Normal, and read it at top speed, being as hungry and thirsty as I was for truth.! Now I want to go through it more slowly, to honor my needs for healing at just about every level to mourn the losses of my early life, and be here more completely in this latter end of my life for myself yes, but also for my children, and all who mean a lot to me. What a gift this is for me, I know, but can see how much it could change our world over time. This podcast was lovely to watch and to listen to. Many thanks to you too, Andre, for the intelligence, comfort and love you also display in giving this platform to Dr. Gabor Mate. Thank you both for your being!!! Shelagh!

I love Dr Gabor Maté. He’s gentle and powerful all the while keeping it REAL. I utilize his knowledge and research at a parent and as an individual. So incredibly grateful to this man and his life’s work and vulnerability. Great interview, Andre!!
  • Andre is such a gifted interviewer. He asks the most profound questions that many seek answers to. Furthermore, he is such a great deep listener. He waits for the answers and smoothly then moves on. There are alot of podcasters out there who do not have this skill and the audience never gets the full answer. Thank you, Andre. I am impressed by you, young man. Keep bringing us this amazing content.

Traits that predict and cause illness: 1. Automatic concern for other people's (emotional) needs above your own 2. A rigid identification with duty, role, and responsibility 3. Repressed (and/or suppressed) emotions 4. (Self-limiting) beliefs: 5. Responsibility for other people's emotions 6. "I must NEVER disappoint ANYONE..."

I genuinely love Dr. Gabor Mate and his work. This was a particularly excellent interview, however, and my introduction to this channel. I must say Andre, you have found your calling. You ask excellent questions, you patiently await answers without interruption and you don't go off the rails with nonsense or get sidetracked. Nor do you make it about yourself or try to throw in your own tidbits of knowledge to compare. Excellent. Above and beyond. I look forward to checking out the rest of your channel.
  • False diagnosed by a inexperienced therapist which had just started therapy practise and she had only seen me 3 to 5 times - diagnosed me with Bpd - had to take overdose of SSRI and gained terribly weight and other severe side effects - when I informed our experienced family doctor - he warned me that most of those "diagnosis" are terribly wrong and he gave me the wise advice to tapper those medication which I started immediately with success - never ever had a personality disorder at all - never ever will take any medicine nor diagnosis from any therapist or psychiatrist at all - my trust into those psychodocs has gone - today I do help myself with watching videos from Gabor Mate which helps me more than any mediciation could ever do it for me.
  • @TheMardi45
To stay true to ourselves, who we really are, when we are living in the world of, The Emperor's New Clothes, while down the Rabbits Hole, at the Mad Hatters party, is incredibly difficult. It takes a lot of courage. It is swimming against the current. It's why it is so comforting to hear someone speaking a truth. I love it. You are not all alone.💗. There is so much sadness in this beautiful planet. Heaps of love to you.🐝
  • Brilliant interviewer. When Gabor loses his chain of thought Andre so beautifully summarises all and validates why it was important to just let Gabor talk. He showed that all were valid and relevant and that he was really listening. And for the listener threaded the needle eloquently. So masterful and remarkable
  • I can’t thank Gabor enough! I now know I have ADD in me! I’ve cried to my partner and said I need all these strategies to help myself now I know.. he said why fix what isn’t broken.. please just be you 🙏.. I’m so sensitive and disorganized and all I know to change that is to close off.. I’m feeling more myself than I ever have, and Gabor has helped me understand myself so much. The more I can be me the more we all can be us together and that’s so important to me.. connection xxxx
  • What a wonderful human Gabor is. I could have listened to him all day. Thank you Andre, for bringing this amount of wisdom to the lay people like me. I appreciate all you both greatly.
