For Country Music fans! On her "Carroll Baker in Nashville" CBC 1981 Special, Canadian country music star Carroll Baker introduced celebrated Canadian-American Country music legend Hank Snow. Nicknamed The Yodelling Cowboy and The Singing Ranger, Hank was born in Nova Scotia where he endured extreme poverty, beatings and psychological abuse as well as physically punishing labour during the Great Depression. His ambition was to become a country singer like his idol Jimmie Rodgers and he succeeded, with numerous #1 hits in North America, including his compositions sung here I’ve Been Everywhere, I’m Moving On and Hello Love as well as gaining numerous Country Music Awards.
Hank Snow’s business partner was Tom Parker. Snow and Parker formed the management team, Hank Snow Attractions. A regular on the Grand Ole Opry, in 1954 Snow persuaded the directors to allow a young Elvis Presley to appear on stage. Then Snow used Presley as his opening act and introduced him to Tom Parker. The partnership signed a management contract with Presley but before long, Snow was out and Parker had full control over the rock singer's career. Snow called Parker “the most egotistical, obnoxious human being I've ever had dealings with.”
Another Canadian country and western singer was Wilf Carter “the father of Canadian Country Music,” was also born in Nova Scotia. In the US he was called Montana Slim or The Yodelling Cowboy.
Also born in Nova Scotia, Canada’s First Lady of Country Music Carroll Baker between 1970 and 1982 released 31 consecutive charting singles. Twelve of these reached the top of the Canadian charts! Check out the previous two excerpts from her Nashville Special on this st40tv site, one with The Oak Ridge Boys and the other with Conway Twitty and Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin Brothers.

  • Hank was the best and I miss him so much. I became a fan the first time I ever heard his voice back in 1952. And I was so fortunate the get to know him and his wonderful wife, Min, in later years and I miss them both.
