We continue our look at the Vermilion Cliffs area - viewing the cliffs at dawn, hiking the beautiful cliffs to an old uranium mine, the Sun Valley Mine, viewing a historic monument to Dominguez and Escalante, and stopping at overlooks.

Getting close to the Vermilion Cliffs can't be beaten by a hike up the Sun Valley Mine Trail. A 2.4-mile out-and-back trail takes hikers up along the foothills of the cliffs and around several washes to the remains of an old uranium mine. The trail is rated as moderate with sections of steeper incline. Elevation gain is around 500 feet. At the end of the trail, lies the remaining wooden supports of an old headframe, rusted-out vehicles and barrels, and a covered shaft.

Down the road also is a historical marker to the Dominguez-Escalante trail. Dominquez and Escalante were two fathers in a small party looking to find a way from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Spanish colonies in California. Forced to turn around, they never reached California, however, paved the way for future expeditions and became part of the Old Spanish Trail.

I loved driving in that ancient dry ocean/ lake to the west of the cliffs. Great video . Thanks.
  • @scotts3938
Thanks for showing us another spectacular place!

Glenn I think I have watched every video you have ever posted - truly wonderful job. You inspire me to go out and do road trips in New Mexico Arizona Utah and Colorado - four corner beautiful states.

Great view of the cliffs. We just drove through the same area. Truly breathtaking land. Thanks for the video!
  • Watching the whole video but commenting on what you said in the first minute 🤪 I agree, YouTube kinda makes you get out and go places 😎👍
  • The Lodge looks really nice and its a great location. You mention its not historic but if you think about it the 90s were 30 years ago now. That's historic to some people lol.

That old grill, bed and frame look to be from a WW2 era Dodge WC series 1/2 ton truck. That’s pretty cool to see something that most likely was used for the war effort made its way to being used at a mine in Utah. I hope it stays up there.

Dude! Come on! You are killing me! Wow! Such a good job! I gotta get down there!

Talking about Escalante and Dominguez. On highway 50 north out of Delta, Colorado you come to a canyon named after Escalante and a little further up highway 50 is another canyon named after Dominguez. They are between Delta and Grand Junction Colorado. I've hiked in both of them and they are beautiful and much to see there. Escalante and Dominguez got around the west in their time and warranted naming canyons after them. Thanks for this beautiful video. I have wanted to see Vermillion Cliffs, Antelope canyon and the wave in that area. Seen pictures but not the real thing yet.
  • I am learning about all the things I missed when travelling through the area. Guess I gotta go back! Thanks for being an awesome tour guide as usual.
  • That was a great idea illuminating the mine shafts. They looked fairly well-maintained in comparison to many I’ve seen on YouTube. It’s a good thing that the openings were covered with grates. Otherwise, people would be scrambling down that ladder in a heartbeat.
  • Another great video. I watch several travel/overland channels, and this has become one of my favorite channels.

Great Video - The vastness of the scenery has to be seen to be believed. Drove along the 89A about two weeks ago en-route to North Rim Grand Canyon, it's a great drive unfortunately our schedule didn't allow any time to explore the cliffs further so watching you was most interesting.
  • @ervinslens
Scenery is outstanding here, fantastically filmed surroundings!🔥
  • @PatchGirl68
Well Done Glenn and Amy! This video is by far my favorite! Without appearing like a weirdo, LOL, I've been planning hiking trip for next fall in Utah and AZ by watching your adventures. Coincidently, I'm going to the North Rim Grand Canyon and now will add Vermillion Cliffs to the trip. thanks Glenn! And Amy great edition job!
  • I really appreciate all you do for the channel, especially getting up early for those sunrise shots. I've been down that exact highway twice now but have not had the time to check it out as good as you did. Funny how we stopped at that exact Escalante/Dominguez historic spot but the story boards were not there yet, so we had no idea what it was at the time. Googled it later. Love, love ANY orange cliffs!
  • @gstiles7
🤣he said wood shaft...sorry, I had to. Just made me think of Beavis & Butthead. Seriously, 100% it was a great episode and you did the cliffs justice! Definitely think that you did a not so often done tour of the cliffs and the mines. Can't wait for the rest of the trip!!

Someone with mining experience would know better than I, but when you illuminated the mine shaft, it appeared to be the top of the elevator cage. Perhaps when the grate was placed over the mine shaft, the elevator was secured to prevent the adventurous from wanting to venture down. Very nice video, thanks for sharing.
